Prayer

I've never understood praying for specific situations. Such as a person with an illness or a shitty situation like Ferguson.
Everybody is saying pray, pray, pray and I wonder why an omni-all-those-big-words god needs my plea to talk him into interjecting himself into a situation or healing a person.
Some say it's for me and my piece of mind and hey, that actually makes more sense but if it is just a self-help exercise, let's call it that and stop the bullshite.
You can't say god knows the past and the future and then say let's all pray for something to happen. Smh.

Luke 11: 1-4
quote:
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
And he said unto them, When ye pray, say,
"Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil."
1 John 5:14
quote:
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us
Isaiah 55:9
quote:
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Luke 22:42
quote:
Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
So basically, you should not pray for anything in particular, just forgiveness and that God's will be done. To pray for something specific to happen is problematic for two reasons:
1. It could contradict God's divine plan in which case it will not be answered. (It is not your place to suggest alterations to/question his plan)
2. It tests your faith if what you want is not in accordance with that plan and does not happen.
That is if you believe in that kind of thing.

Praying always seemed odd to me, even when I was doing it regularly.
Either God knows best and your prayers wont affect anything (in which case they are pointless) or prayer can change outcomes in which case one wonders why God was going to carry out the alternative in the first place.

From my perspective, this makes sense. Prayer does for the religious person what meditation does for the transcendentalist and what reductionism does for the atheist.
I'm for whatever works for the individual and I definitely think prayer works for some people.

The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

The way it was explained to me: It's more about staying "connected" with God during trying times than it is to change a situation.
