to win in college basketball there are two paths to take
1. have excellent talent
2. have several hard working, smart playing seniors with the right coach
You rarely, if ever, see #2 in the SEC. So, there are a few teams with great talent, and the rest are full of athletes that don't play smart and have subpar coaching.

Bottom line is the same thing we talk about with the Big Ten and other leagues in football : have to win some meaningful OOC games in the early season. Got plenty of opportunities coming up for Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Mizzou, Ole Miss, etc. If you lose all the games against solid Power 5 teams and drop some games to mid-majors then you aren't going to get respect.
