However, this IS South Carolina and the coach ought to have known. Maybe he deserves forgiveness and maybe not (I can't judge his heart) but the school system did the right thing by acting immediately given all the watermelon racism going around lately as well as the location.
WTF does South Carolina have to do with it? We're probably the least racist, most get-along, state in the country. Blacks and Whites here reached an agreement long ago.
Let's really get to the Roots (pardon the pun) of this issue. The predominantly black teams were getting their asses handed to them by the predominantly white teams ... and the black folks didn't like it.
quote:
But here's where the things get even worse. At the close of each game, the players smashed the watermelon on the ground while reportedly making the monkey-like sounds of "ooh ooh ooh ooh." Apparently, the players did this after four or fives games, each time evidently after the largely white Raptor squad beat one of their opponents, each one largely an African-American team. Parents of players on one of the opposing teams reportedly brought this to the attention of African-American School Board member Michael Miller last week.
Next thing you know, someone is going to claim fried chicken, and that cute little nappy-headed African American kid named Buckwheat on Spanky and the Gang, racist things as well ... sheesh.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with teaching about the historical importance of watermelon in schools ....
BTW, Bud Walpole has been reinstated ( Video), and the complainers and whiners told to pound sand by the rest of the community.

The only people who perpetuate this shite are tools like you who bleed all over everything with your vaginas and remind everyone THIS USED TO BE RACIST.
Stop bringing up the past and suddenly this is a non-issue.

It is the American South. Black people eat watermelons. White people eat watermelons. EVERYONE eats watermelons. They are a tasty and refreshing treat in our ridiculous heat.
You sound like the hysterical mob who called for ouster of David Howard (Washington DC mayoral aide) several years ago, because he used the word "****rdly" in a press conference.
RACIST!!!!!
Never mind that this word simply means "miserly."
Never mind that the word's etymology is totally unrelated to the "N-word." Never mind that it descends from "nig" (the Old Norse word for "cheap"), whereas the "N-word" descends from "niger" (the Latin word for "black"). Never mind that anyone with an education is familiar with the word and understands that it has no racist connotations.
To an ignorant, uneducated buffoon, it SOUNDS like a nasty word. So we cannot use it.
By the same token, we better not eat watermelons. Someone might be offended because of an archaic stereotype.

HOLY CRAP. The Rant filter seems to edit the word "n i g g a r d l y" as well. Apparently someone running the Rant is one of the folks I am describing.

Not the same anymore.
Farmers markets used to be cheaper but now they can actually be more expensive. Must be hipsters and dinks driving up those prices.

To answer your question(s) of 'what does south carolina' have to do with it? Teachers and coaches in EVERY state in the Deep South have to be far more aware of these old stereotypes. The Deep South is assumed guilty when it comes to race - may not be fair but that's the the way it is and there are plenty of racists around to keep that stereotype of the Deep South gaining traction (doesn't matter if Ohio and Michigan are the largest bases of support for groups like the Klan and FWIW they are). This is the burden of history and the way the deep south has been portrayed in modern times - reality has nothing to do with it - and it won't change for a while.
And of course, other regions have worse issues but again we carry the stereotype and the burden of history. As the saying goes, "Life isn't fair."

Supermarket watermelon tastes like actual water. Only one in a 100 have any flavor. Stick to the small farmers you know or even those who set up on the roadside.
