I was standing in a drug store in Bay Springs, Ms., listening to the end of the Egg Bowl where we tied them 10-10 that put us in our first bowl in years.Beat NC in the Liberty Bowl when it was still played in Philadelphia.

Gas cost 29 cents a gallon.
Maybe up north our out west ... but in the South it was more like .22-.25 cents a gallon. I could buy a gallon of gas for a quarter, cut six or seven lawns with the gas at $1.00 per lawn, and was making serious money as a kid.
The average American home cost a little over $12,000.
Maybe up north or out west but the average home in the South around that time was well below $12. More like $9k. You could buy a nice Jim Walters 1,000 sf home back then for $5k.

Cleopatra and To Kill a Mockingbird are box office winners.
Cleopatra was big because of the amount of money spent to make the film and because E.Taylor and Richard Burton were cheating on their spouses on set and that was a major no-no at the time. There was major scandal. I used to hear my mother and sisters yacking about it all the time.
Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly owned the charts.
Not true. Not in '63. frick. Buddy Holly died in '59, how the hell did he own the charts in '63? '63 was The Beach Boys and Johnny Cash.

Yes they were. But the top TV shows had to be Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights followed by Bonanza. The Fugitive was another great show back then. The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke.
Ole Miss won their last SEC football championship.
Johnny Vaught had them playing ball back then. Ole Miss was big time. No one disliked Ole Miss. They were The South. They had Rebel flags and their mascot was a Confederate Colonel. They played Dixie. The first big time college football game I ever remember listening to was with my Dad in 1959, and we were talking about this the other day. We were visiting family in Memphis, (my Dad's Sister had died and she lived out there), and we listened on the radio to the LSU/Ole Miss game. I think the final score was like 7-6 or something. There were some Ole Miss fans in the parlor with us and they were yelling and screaming and I got all caught-up in the excitement. That was '59 when Aunt Mabelle died and I kept following them for years afterwards right through the sixties. There were some serious, and I mean serious, battles between Ole Miss and LSU in those years from around '59-'64 or so. LSU had Jerry Stovall and Ole Miss had Dunaway and Crispino ... those games used to be epic.
