No joke, I actually feel bad for Gurley. NCAA is a joke, borderline criminal

The NCAA, universities, and business people make huge profits off the backs of poor college kids.
The NCAA has made it a "crime" for a player to make a little money off his/her likeness.
Think about that.
The NCAA's stance is that a student/athlete does not own his/her likeness.
The sad thing is that poor student/athletes need the money the most. Sure, these kids receive full scholarships that amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. But that scholarship value doesn't put cash money in the kid's pockets. Money that they can use to eat, to travel back to mom's house, or to go on a date. You know...cash money to actually have a life in college outside of sports.
In the absense of the scholarship value, these kids are still very poor while in school.
Gurley made about $5 per signature totalling $400. $400 would barely last 2 - 3 weeks for that kid. Only if he was extremely frugal.
What a shameful scam.

It's a tough situation, but how do you regulate this if it is allowed?
"Come to LSU, and your autograph will be worth 100K to me. *wink*"

Perhaps it's time to pay student/athletes.

I may be wrong, I think he signed 500 items for another dealer. This drove the price down on the dealer who paid the $400 for his 80 autographs. He is the one who turned Gurley into UGA compliance. In other words, Gurley sold himself out for trinkets when he knew he is going to be a millionaire in a few months. He knowingly broke the rules. I hate it for him............but it is what it is.

Why feel sorry for him? Rules are rules whether you agree with them or not. Gurley knew what he was doing.

Counterpoint: an alumni goes to a player and says, "I will pay you $100,000 for a signed photo of you." This is clearly not market compensation for the likeness or labor. It's a payoff to play at University X. Under your proposal, how is that avoided?
Scenario 2: booster comes to athlete and says, "I know you need a job. I need a salesperson that doesn't come in to the office or sell anything. Can you do that for $50,000?" How do you avoid that?

The players do get cash, every week for per diem. Then they get all of their food for free. The players have plenty of money.

Monthly stipends for players should have been done a long time ago. The fact that smaller schools can't pay is not an issue, nor should be.

Steven A.Smith's advise to Gurley.Clean your dorm room, pack your car and get the hell out of town.
Said Georgia showed no loyalty to him with the quick suspension so he should feel no loyalty to them.
Even brought up the point that this may be the start of College Football Stars saying the hell with the NCAA.
edit:They were saying he signed 500 items for between $8---$25.
So at the high end it's $12,500.By February that'll be pocket change for him.

You dont get it killz.
I dont have a problem with stipends. Small ones that allow players to have a little scratch.
Jobs, selling autographs etc. No. Should never happen. That would open Pandora's box.

Take the money out of the game and this issue is moot.

Oh. My. God. I am so tired of this. Your argument sucks.
Making huge profits off of the backs of poor college kids? Buddy, I had $70,000 in student loans..ate raman noodles for 4 years and drove a truck part time and full time over the summers. These guys have their room and board paid for, books, tuition, food, a lot of clothes too...and it's not enough because universities make a big "profit"? Do you know what profit is? It's bottom line. And VERY few football programs make ANY bottom line profit...so what will happen is, only a select few will be able to pay their players. What about the other sports? They will want money too. Do you think that the women's badmitton team, armed with Title IX will just stand aside while the top schools pay only male players of our favorite sports?
