Is every coach in the West very good to elite?

I believe so. I think that someone will be fired eventually and be very successful at their next stop.

Sumlin

Bert
Freeze
Malzahn
All great coaches.

Damn, never realized how good all of our coaches were

I think they all have now proven they can win big games.

One of these is not like the others.

Sorry - I'm going to have to see Mullen win more than 1 game against a decent opponent.

No
1. Win something
2. Win when your team is expected to win.
3. Win consistently.

I guess my reason for this thread is to say that if the 7 best coaches in college football were all in the West, teams would still lose games. I really believe that all of these guys are Top 20 coaches.

Mullen took a perennial 5-7 program and now averages 8 wins annually with this season having us ranked 12th in the nation. Mullen is a very good coach, not elite, but very good.

Mullen beats 4 Conference USA - HBCU - Sun Belt teams, beats Kentucky and/or Vanderbilt, Arkansas (when they are terrible) or Ole Miss (when they are terrible) and loses to everyone else.
Now - if he gets over the hump this year then ok. LSU was a great start. But here are Mullen's wins :
2009
Jackson State (1AA)
VAnderbilt (2-10)
MTSU (10-3, SunBelt)
Kentucky (7-6)
Ole Miss (9-4)
2010
Memphis (1-11)
Georgia (6-7)
Alcorn State (1AA)
Houston (5-7)
Florida (8-5)
UAB (4-8)
Kentucky (6-7)
Ole Miss (4-8)
Michigan (7-6)
2011
Memphis (2-10)
La Tech (8-5)
UAB (3-9)
Kentucky (5-7)
UT Martin (1AA)
Ole Miss (2-10)
Wake Forest (6-7)
2012
Jackson State (1AA)
Auburn (3-9)
Troy (5-7)
South Alabama (2nd year of football)
Kentucky (2-10)
Tennessee (5-7)
MTSU (8-4)
Arkansas (4-8)
2013
Alcorn State (1AA)
Troy (6-6)
Bowling Green (10-4)
Kentucky (2-10)
Arkansas (3-9)
Ole Miss (8-5)
Rice (10-4)
Mullen has 3 wins over 10 win teams in entire tenure : MTSU (Sun Belt), Bowling Green (MAC), Rice (CUSA). He only had 9 wins in 5 years against teams with winning records coming into 2014.
Again - he's solid - but he has to win more than 1 game against a who knows how good they are LSU team before I anoint him "elite" or "very good".

I don't think Mullen is a particularly good coach.

Yep. The SEC gets all the talent, but also all the good coaches.

But I think that anybody on that list would be excellent outside of the SEC West. Obviously, there is no way to prove that, but I just don't get the feeling that these guys don't know what they're doing.

Yea, I'm just not sold on Mullen as anything other than a solid 8-9 win coach even at a place like Florida or Texas or Alabama.
Freeze hasn't been around long enough for me to come to a conclusion yet.

Bielema has already been to three BCS bowls so your premise is correct on him. It just remains to be seen if he can win in the SEC.
