What up with J. Rumph.

He had a little injury during the Clemson game. Other than that, not much

The biggest problem I've seen with our receivers so far is that they're not getting enough separation. Murray was usually (not always) able to overcome that because he had an incredibly quick release and good velocity. Mason needs that separation, especially for throws over 15 yards or so. I'm not sure that Rumph will be able to separate better than the guys we had last week. But, he is tall and if he has good hands he might help Mason out.

No. He was pictured warming up, but didn't make it any further onto the field.

We have more injuries during warm ups and celebrating than anyone.

Haven't seen any reports of him being injured. There was another thread on here somewhere that basically stated that, according to an Emerson tweet, that Rumph was eligible to play less than 30 minutes before the game...

Mason has a faster relase than Murray does.

There are some throws where Hutson has a very quick motion. It's almost a flip of the wrist, in fact there have been times when the TV announcers called it that. It works for really short passes, as long as his decision is timely. When he does it on those 15-20 yard throws to the sideline, especially to his right, I hold my breath because the ball really floats.
Murray, on the other hand, had a full release, from right behind his ear that got really good velocity on short and medium range passes. Plus, Murray could get into that position almost immediately. I remember a touchdown pass from last season (I believe, can't remember the game). We were at about the opponent's 5 yard line. Murray looked right for Lynch, who was covered, looked left and threw in one motion to receiver who was open. The defender saw it coming but the interval from Aaron turning and zipping the ball about 10 yards in the air was so quick that he couldn't get there. There aren't many college quarterbacks that could've made that throw, IMO, because they just couldn't turn and throw in one quick motion like that and get good zip on it. They might complete it, but not before the defender converged enough to stop the touchdown.

Thanks for sheddin' light on that for me, Spiff.
If he's getting reps from Mason before the Clemson, he's ready to play IMO.
Hopefully his injury is a thing of the past.

Was it just me or does there still seem to be miscommunication between Mason and receivers? I recall at least two passes during CU game where they were not on same page.
I wonder if his routes are the actual problem??

Mason said in an interview a few days before the Clemson game that he didn't know if Rumph would be running the right route last season but this season he understands what to do better. And we saw nothing of him against Clemson.

what dp you base your lack of separation allegation on? please link plays so we can see...

After I rewatched the game I thought Clemson did a nice job of covering the deep routes and forcing mason to throw short passes. I haven't looked at stats but it seems like Venables defense doesn't ever really give up huge passing plays

Just an impression from rewatching the last three games. I've been critical of Mason, but there weren't a lot of plays were he had receivers really wide open. Most of his YAC have come off of very short passes, partly because deeper receivers were tightly covered and even when he hit them they didn't run far.
I started compiling some numbers a few weeks ago. In the Nebraska game, passes that travelled more than 5 yards past the LOS accounted for just 35 YAC on 7 completions, and 20 of that came on one play. In the GT game, there was 39 YAC on 13 completions of passes that travelled more than 5 yds past the LOS. I'll try to compile the Clemson data if I get a chance.
Those are pretty low numbers, due to several reasons. One, Mason wasn't doing a great job of hitting guys in stride. Two, the receivers didn't have a lot of separation, at least not by the time the ball got there. A third possibility is, like the Conley play I linked earlier, that Hutson simply waited too long to throw the ball and the defense got into better position. And it's also possible that some receivers are getting good separation but aren't targetted by Mason and I haven't seen them on TV. Since you can't always see the entire route on TV, it's kind of tough to tell what was the predominating factor.
If I have a chance I'll try to go back and look at Clemson.

The best thing for mason is to just keep playing and get more experience. He's a 5th year senior but he's still getting accustomed to playing at this level still. This will be a good test for him in a hostile environment. And their gameplan will be to make us throw the deep ball he just doesn't need to force things

So Richt said that Rumph has a hamstring issue?
