That draw up play to Howard was going to be great, Kiffin just didn't anticipate the CB coming over. It was actually on target from Sims.
Also that throw to Cooper from our 5 for about 20 yards was great.
Other than that, we have two great running backs and our receivers get extremely good yards after catch. Let them do their thing.

His arm strength looked fine to me. I look for him to only become more accurate.
I hope you're right. When I say arm strength, I mean to be able to throw deep balls, which we didn't see last night.

What really impressed me is his instinct in the pocket. He is VERY hard to sack and he showed that he can avoid a defender and still stay in the pocket and make reads.
This^^ Sims showed me some very good situational awareness and an elusive element we didn't get with AJ or GMAC...I did catch myself holding my breath when Sims aired it out more times than not but adequate QB play might be all we need this year with some of the skill players we have in other positions.

GMAC said Sims did ok (which isn't a knock at all) and some guy on Twitter got pissy.
Some of y'all are too sensitive with Sims. It's a little disturbing with some people just defending him from even a little criticism. I think GMAC knows more about football and the QB position than any of us.

I'm rewatching the game on DVR right now and can't for the life of me understand how he's gotten as much criticism as he has. People have the right to criticize, but I have the right to say it's unwarranted.
On the first 2 drives, he's thrown 6 perfect passes, 1 intentional throw away (the right decision), 1 below average pass (12 yard completion to Coop on 3rd down from the end zone that he had to stop to catch) and 1 inexcusably bad pass (low throw to Coop on 3rd down)
Yes, most of the perfect passes were within 5 yards of the LOS but one was a 15 yard pass perfectly thrown to Jones after recognizing that the wheel route was covered. The next play was a TD run by TJ to cap off a 90 yard drive.
Another thing I didn't notice yesterday was how poor our protection was. Guys weren't getting beat one-on-one but there've been about 3 plays with blown assignments leaving a rusher unblocked.
It's hard for me to fathom how he's getting this much criticism. I read an analysis from a RBR editor this morning that argued that he's such a bad passer that the only chance we have of winning games is to switch to a zone read offense. He wasn't kidding and a lot of posters in the comments agreed. I just don't get it.

If by "exceeded expectaitons" you guys mean he looked like a capable MAC starter, than yes, he exceeded expectations. I am still praying Coker wins the job somehow.
You are writing the kid off after his first game as a starter. Think about that for a second. What have you seen from Coker has you "praying" for him to play, exactly? He had his chance to win the job over the summer and he didn't, yet you still think he's better for our offense? That is pretty silly. It's like you have already made up your mind about what kind of players both these guys are, and are shifting reality to suit that.

It's a matter of opinion. He missed some calls, but that's easily just first game jitters.
It was his down the field passing that drew most of it. He was 1/4 or 1/5 or something like that of passes that went 15 or more yards in the air. And then he just threw short all game. I know I'm not saying he can't do it, but the idea that he has to show it isn't ludicrous.

Writing him off and saying the backup should be the starter is more than a "little criticism." Obviously you aren't doing it, but plenty of people are.

GMAC didn't. These homers on Twitter are saying GMAC has no room to criticize. By that standard most of the guys on ESPN can't say anything neutral or negative about players

Were people this critical of GMac in 2009? Blake looked at least that good to me. I think he way exceeded expectations and people should be much more positive about his performance. The problems with this team lie on the defensive side of the ball.

Yeah. The problem I have though is even if you say he did ok, they think you're insulting him.

Oh just STFU! U R MORON! We are all here singing the praises of Coop, Yeldon, Henry and all the other great black players on OUR team but we make a criticism about one and suddenly everyone is a raciest??
George Wallace is dead. Lets leave him buried where he belongs!

I love all these arguments about who the current QB should be. Saban needs to go ahead & put Coker in the FAU game so he can show everybody what he already knows. Then, we can go ahead & roll on without any doubt with Sims.

We keep comparing Sims to GMAC, but GMAC had a pretty good defense playing for him as well. This defense is currently struggling to find it's identity so we need to have a QB to make some above average things happen to keep us in some tough games.

If Coker was the better player he would have been out there yesterday afternoon.
I think a lot of you are just being pissy because the guy you wanted to win the job hasn't won it yet.

No one argue with him. He's not going to change his mind.

Absolutely.
You know, Saban's could use the same remarks about Kiffin in talking about Sims.
""You know, the guy is a really good (QB) now, all right," Saban said. "Y'all need to fess up to that."
Here were Saban's remarks about the comparison between Sims and Coker...which everyone probably saw...and he could follow that up today with "I tried to tell you guys..."
""I think both guys have done a really good job and I think that Blake has a lot more familiarity with the system, having been here longer. I think he's more comfortable in doing the things that we do and has done a really good job. Has played really, really well in this fall camp, has played well in the scrimmages. The team has had a good rhythm when he's in there at quarterback.
"Jacob is obviously the newer guy of the two, who doesn't have the same knowledge and experience. I think we're just trying to get him more and more familiar so that he play with the rhythm that we need to play with offensively. I just think it's about confidence. It's kind of an interesting thing."

I'd like to point out on the "nickel and dime" comment that that IS how the West Coast offense works. It's all about getting 1st downs and we did that well Saturday. He may have a limited upside but he's playing well, better than most expected.

Definitely. The short throws set up everything in the WCO.
But the point isn't to keep doing it. You do them to set up the deeper passes. Don't get me wrong, WVU kept giving them to us so we kept taking them. The only question I have for Sims is the deep ball. Not saying he can't, not saying he can. Just wanna know for sure.
