I'm in the market for a new laptop, and I know nothing about computers. Which one should I buy and why? TIA

Lots of info on what you're planning on using the laptop for.
Great job.
Jk.
You suck.

Go to a store and try both.
ETA: My personal preference is a PC.

What do you plan on using your computer for?
Searching the internet? Get a PC.

Macs are good... but Apple's business plan is all about 'art' and planned obsolescence.
They are grossly overpriced as well.
PC's are affordable, more easily upgradeable should you choose to do so, much more software available...
So, unless you want to pay more than you need to to join the Mac 'club', you'd be just fine with a PC.
Now, I will duck the volleys of the MacFantics.

Their costs are out of control. They claim the quality is worth the cost, and in some instances they might be right... but the Mac vs PC dilemma is the beauty of the free market. Two different business models clashing and bringing out the best in each other. Yay capitalism!

If you want a computer get a PC and spend the rest of the money on something fun.
If you want a status symbol to read email, spend twice as much, get a Mac.

Macs are a great build and OS. But not worth the costs associated.
Trust me. I've overseen networks and PC deployments for 10s of 1000s of desktops and laptops. The failure rate is literally the same, at best, less than a percentage point in favor of the macs.
Now, all of that being said, of you have a heavy investment in iOS (iPhone, iPad) a Mac can compliment that experience.
If you're into some design and video editing, macs truly are a better machine for that. If it's browsing, email, games etc, you are literally adding $100s of dollars that are nothing of value to your purchase.
Don't' scrimp and buy the cheap HP, Acer, or Asus. Get a decent mid to upper level machine and you are getting the same specs as a $1000 Mac.

Mac. I use to think a Mac was just a status symbol until I actually bought one. I'll never go back to PC. It's so much more user friendly and the durability far exceeds anything you'll find from Dell or HP. I bought a refurbished MacBook for $880. A PC with the same capability would have cost me $1000+. While it is true you can easily upgrade a PC a Mac can operate for years just fine without them. Not to mention it's extremely more difficult to get a virus/spyware on a Mac. "3nOut" was correct also. With my iPhone and other basic Apple products the Mac is very efficient.
ETA I'm not a hipster nor do I drink Starbucks.

Depends on what software you plan on using. Outside of editing that's almost universally a no.

Sorry for being so vague.
The majority of use will be for browsing, email, and kids homework and such.
We do have I phones and iPads but I dont know if it would be worth the extra $ just for the iOS.
We've had an hp for about 4 years and now it's slow as shite now.
Basically was wondering if it's really worth the extra money or not
