Save your money and stay in a cheap hotel by Hartsfield. Leave Atlanta by 9:00 am Thursday and you'll be in Cola before 1:00 pm
I wouldn't stay anywhere remotely close to the airport. Not a good part of town.
Like I said, your best bet is to drive a little east and stay in lithonia or conyers or some other little town like that. I'm sure there will be rooms available for around $50 a night if you go on priceline. I wouldn't normally recommend those cities, but they are both right near 20 so it should be easy off, easy on.

The only issue with cancelling Wednesday night hotel room in Columbia for a cheaper one near ATL, is that check-in in Columbia would then be right in the middle of the afternoon when we'll be tailgating. Early check-in may not be available.

Conyers (exit 82) Hwy138 is the perfect place to crash Wed. night (30min. drive from Hartsfield). Lotta solid hotels, food & drink along the access roads on both sides of I-20. Then eastbound on Thur. morning (against Atl. traffic) 2 1/2 hrs. max to Co Sc...

and that definitley makes sense, but I'd suggest calling around some places pretty soon, like today, and seeing what you can find check-in wise.
I'm tellin ya, if you LAND at 10:30, you won't even get to the rental car desk until approaching 11. Leave airport around 11:30 after getting bags and car, then with perfect driving conditions get to columbia around 3am, keeping in mind the hell stretch between augusta and columbia. You can do it, but it'll be miserable. Personally, I need a good night's rest so I'd much rather get up at 5am if need be on Thursday and hit the road rather than do it all wednesday night.

Ended up booking a flight to land in ATL at 820p, so we should be much better off than them waiting for me to land at 1030p. That should make a big difference and we can go ahead and get on to our hotel in Columbia from the airport.

Very good, much better situation. Where are you staying Saturday night after the UGA game?
Posted on 7/8/14 at 11:36 am to WG_Dawg
We're working on that. The guy coordinating the trip says he's talking to some people on vrbo and airbnb. He says closest hotel available is about 20 miles away.

How is he cab/uber situation in Athens? Plentiful and easy to get one, or scarce and impossible on game weekend?
Posted on 7/8/14 at 11:44 am to ColoradoAg03
I left Athens before Uber was around. In ATL it's super easy..idk if they even have it in Athens.
Once you're on campus you don't need to cab anywhere. Stadium/campus/bars/restaurants/etc are all walking distance

Athens is an awesome place...my favorite road trip.
I concur with the thought process of grabbing lunch in Columbia around 11 on Friday (Diprato's or Groucho's would be my suggestions) then hightailing it straight to Athens for the rest of the weekend. You'd be getting there right around 3 on Friday and the place will be hopping.
Downtown Athens that Friday night will just be awesome, tons of UGA and Clemson girls everywhere. Check out The General for sure.
I am jealous! Luckily I will be in Athens later that month for the Vols and Dawg game! Can't wait!

Generals (or general beauregards), actually. But I agree with everything you said, Friday in athens should be an incredible experience for an outsider. And if the OP has never been to the deep south before (I'll just assume colorado and texas is all lol) general's will probably be quite the experience.

You make it seem like the stretch on I-20 between Atlanta and Augusta is any better

Meh, I mean it's not great. Honestly what stretch of US Interstate is "good"?
All I'm saying is, 4 weeks ago I drove to NC and most of the way was on 20, and the stretch between Augusta and Columbia was simply brutal. Mainly because there are no lights on the side, nothing to look at, and it was dark at the time. Which is the same scenario OP will be faced with.

We booked a small house in Normaltown, a few blocks south across Oglethorpe from the UGA Health Sciences Campus. Is that a pretty solid spot, logistically?
