To the majority of the current fan base, based on all the qualifiers, they are not.
Once again, it doens't matter what the fanbase thinks, including me. I say tech, someone in columbus says AU, someone in valdosta says UF. Ok....well all 3 of us UGA fans have 3 different opinions, so what's the real answer? It doesn't matter what John Q. Fan thinks.
quote:
I would say that probably through the mid '70s they were but not since then.
It doesn't change dude. I heard someone sum it up perfectly one time. Our biggest nemesis can change frequently, while still keeping our biggest rival. Tech is our biggest rival. However, you can say in the early 80s florida and clemson were our biggest nemesis. In the late 80s it was auburn. And so on and so on. A school's "biggest rival" doesn't just change by decade, it is constant and unchanging.
quote:
the fact that Auburn is an adjoining state, a team from the other conference division, an older rival by date, a team we have nearly an even w/l record with, a game that nearly always has national relevance, a team we actually compete for recruits with, a game the fans pay more money to see, a game with a title of "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry" would clearly sway away from Tech.
-tech isn't adjoining, they have our same state
-they used to be in the SEC as well
-older by 1 year
-w/l record only means AU has a better football history. irrelevant to the topic
-"always"? Lol..no team is "always" anything.
-we don't compete with tech for recruits because they run a high school offense. Under O'leary we damn sure did, and they got some very good players
-ticket price goes back to the fact that au just has a better team. nothing more
-uga/gt has a fancy title too. A cooler one actually
quote:
You could also say we hate Florida more and a majority of our fan base is willing to drive 5 hours even in bad years to watch us play them
People drive 5 hours because it's a mini-vacation where you can lay out on the beach, play golf, and get shitecanned for 4 straight days.
quote:
Looking back since that time, AU or FL is clearly the more important game to UGA
Importance doesn't mean they are our biggest rival. The 2012 SECCG was one of the most important games we've played in 3 decades, doens't mean bama is our biggest rival.
quote:
We can agree that GT is still the biggest rival to a small percentage of the UGA fan base.
Ask any UGA fan over age 35 that has a sense of our history and most will say tech. The only reason people under 30 constantly say it's UF is because they've gone their whole lives losing to them.

What's irking me in all of this is people bringing up how GT is our whipping boy. Pre 1990 UF was our little bottom bitch. For like FOREVER. They had that 2 decade stint of skull fricking us annually and they STILL trail the rivalry by 10 games. These things are cyclical. If we are gonna use that one parameter to differentiate our rivalries then Auburn is our biggest rival because of how woefully even it is.
I realize that's one point and it's not even the one that some people on this thread are sticking to (not that I know, I didn't feel like reading the past half page of novels) but when I argue with students, people my age, or outsiders that's their main point. Georgia football isn't only what you have been alive to see. It's the entire history of the program. You're not supposed to like Clemson, you're not supposed to root on the cocks, you're not supposed to cheer on Auburn, you NEVER take joy in a Gator victory, and Georgia Tech is never, ever, ever, ever supposed to succeed.

John Q fan is the only one doing the thinking and able to determine who is our biggest rival. A poll of them would prove you wrong but your argument against that would logically be "they are wrong".

So, if GT stopped playing football tomorrow or we stopped putting them on our schedule, 100 years from now they would still be our biggest rival? Things do change. Ask Oklahoma-Nebraska.

I am over 35 and just asked two others that have been going to UGA games since before I was born. They said you are wrong.
The majority disagrees with you. Tech is NOT our biggest rival. They are less significant to most fans in nearly every definition other than they happen to be in the same State. They are a rival...just not the biggest.
Clearly, they are your biggest rival but accept that you opinion is in the minority.

So if all the UGA fans in georgia somehow got together and there was a collective vote where clemson was unanimously decided to be our biggest rival, that would just magically make it so?

So, if GT stopped playing football tomorrow or we stopped putting them on our schedule
I'm not speaking in hypotheticals.

I know, which is why clemson isn't a huge rivalry anymore. From 1980 through the mid-90s clemson was as fierce a rivalry as any other, right up there with florida. But they have never been our #1 rival. Would bama/auburn still be each others' #1 if they stopped playing for a while? Actually, they did stop playing each other for 41 years, doesn't look like that has slowed them down any.

The majority disagrees with you
Your sample size is 3 dudes you know and a few people on a message board thread. I am positive that across the entire spectrum of all UGA fans everywhere, they would tell you tech is our biggest rival.

accept that you opinion is in the minority
I will do no such thing, because it's not.

the guard is changing, though, and you cant deny it. for the last 10 years or so, everyone (heavy majority) who went to georgia has cared significantly more about florida than tech. if the current trends continue for a little longer, the "georgia football didnt start in 2000" argument is gonna die.
every student associates florida with the greatest weekend of the year and the best game of the year. that's gonna hold some weight now and in the future. not to mention the fact that the game actually holds about 500% more significance in regards to our season.

It's an established fact that the rivalry with Florida tends to swing in 20 year waves. Spurrier did not create the hatred for the Gators, but God knows that he certainly didn't help it.

I am 45 years old - graduated UGA in '92
my dad has not missed a GA home game in something like 40 + years
when I was a kid, my brother and I got to go to the JV UGA vs tech game on Thanksgiving, but NEVER to the actual game - it was too big of a deal and he went with his buddies.
We got to go to a bunch of games during the year, but never Tech.
BUT - today, the nerds are no longer our biggest rival.
beating them just is not as important as beating UF or even SC or TN.
I REALLY wish the Nerds would get good, good enough for our games to matter again. historically, they are our biggest rival - today, meh...

Very well thought out post.
And I get it.
The only problem... Georgia Tech is relevant in every way & the Dawgs strive to keep up by using football.
Real talk.

Hey man, I really wish that tech was in the SEC
The whiners from SC, UF & KY that are scared of letting their rivals into the conference are crazy
Having the Jackets in conference would make the game more important
Tech beating us would bring the rivalry back for EVERY UGA fan, or even having Tech in contention for the ACC again.
y'all need to let Paul Johnson take his high school game plan back to GA Southern or Navy and hire a coach that can recruit AND is not such a big a-hole...

You make sense to me.
I'm just saying that Tech & UGA have a big dick competition going way back & don't make us pull ours out.
Let it ride.

I'm not a florida fan so it would be impossible for me to answer that. However, FSU was a girls school until like the 1970s so any parallels you're making between uga/gt and uf/fsu aren't nearly apples to apples.

You didn't answer the LSU question but you actually reinforce my point. Most people would agree that prior to FSU playing football, Georgia would be Florid's biggest rival. Most all Florida fans would now say that FSU (with their limited history) is their biggest rival. But aren't they supposed to be eternal?

Because I'm neither an LSU or Tulane fan. I can't rightly say who other teams' biggest rivals are.

Well duh. If your biggest instate rival doesn't even play sports until 80 years after you have it kinda diminishes the early part of the rivalry I would think.

Sigh...we started playing tech in the 1800s. UF started playing fsu in almost 1960. You really don't see the difference?

Of course I see the difference, Even with an 80 year head start, FSU still passed us as Florida's biggest rival. Ergo, your assessment that a school's "biggest rival is eternal" is flat out wrong. And Florida is our biggest rival.

Not even a question. I can understand why some of the youngers don't understand it given recent history.
They beat us two years running (God forbid) and we will see who is our biggest rival.

1980 was a pretty awesome home schedule...the fact that we played 7 home games (which happened almost never back then)We also got USCe and Clemson at home. No 1AA or directional schools either but A&M and TCU were both pretty bad
Imagine if we played that schedule these days.
