My sister lived there for a for a few years when her husbands company sent him there to work.
Overall, it's no worse than Starkville, maybe better.
However, it is a long way and it is different, geographically speaking.
A visit to the Palo Duro Canyon (between Amarillo and Lubbock) is kind of neat, think Grand Canyon, but on a much smaller scale. Still neat though.

If you are really going to "do" West Texas nothing beats Big Bend and the smaller south towns like Marfa and Alpine.
