If it's open voting, i'd prefer it look similar to the old county unit system.
You mean like only two votes per county or something??
That might be good. We could assign each competitor a color........then on Rib-off election Day, we'll have a graphic of the state of Georgia showing each county and they'll turn the appropriate color as the votes come in.
"Uh oh, the atlanta metro counties are turning Pink.........but Green is on the march in middle Georgia....and in the SOuthern counties.....whoa! Large concentrations of Blue in the northeast...."
I don't know. I definitely want to hire a bluegrass band though. And maybe have a side-ballot for shittiest rib.

Makes sense to me.
This is bbq we're talking about. And the rural areas obviously deserve more of a say.
Just like if this was a "craft beer" homo-pageant, then you might want to flip the COunty Unit SYstem and do the opposite.....and have the urban areas get more votes than the rural areas.
I leave it up to the competitors to decide.....

How can one physically eat these ribs? Is that a possibility?

Yes. Compete, and then eat your own when they're done.
Or......learn from these brave pit-masters as they compete, and try out some of their tricks and methods on your own ribs at a later date.
This is an educational opportunity for all.

I also vote for open judging, but is there a way for us to do a "blind" judging? Perhaps the competitors send in our materials to Jefferson and have him post them - that way, there's no cliquish bullshite manipulating the votes. Let the ribs stand alone.

not competing but this should probably happen. I'll be voting and I don't want to be swayed by bias.

So what will the judges be looking for or giving points for during the contest?
Posted on 3/17/14 at 6:46 pm to Jefferson Dawg
I say keep it as simple as possible.
I don't mind open judging, also blind judging is cool but it's prolly too complicated unless 'damn good dawg' comes up with a way to have anonymous user names or something

Are you trying to figure out how to present your ribs?
dick. dog. dick.

If it's going to be anything more complicated than a straight-up open vote, then I would submit a weighted ballot where a user votes a #1, #2, and #3. Points are awarded in reverse order.
#1- 3 points
#2- 2 points
#3- 1 point
I only propose that system due to the number of contestants, the final results will paint a clearer picture of who wins and how close it really is.
Option 2-
A caucus system would also work, but there would be more calculating to do for Jefferson.
A voter submits #1, #2, #3.
#1 votes are calculated and a top 5 is established, the bottoms are eliminated. The votes are then recalculated among just the Top 5 using the #2 votes for anyone who's #1 vote has been eliminated. You get a top 3. Then you eliminate #4 and #5, recalculate with the #3 votes for any voters who's #1 and #2 votes have been eliminated. Yeah, complicated and takes time to calculate, but would be the best way to do it.

I agree.
Half of the whole point anyway is to simply have a thread where people are smoking ribs simultaneously, talking shite, and having a few laughs along the way, while cars go round and round at Talladega at over 200 mph. Everyone has strong opinions and philosophies, and so it could be hilarious, and good clean fun. And also, educational.
If some cooks want to blog about certain phases of the cook along the way, like deeprig9 and Christopher have done in the past, great. If others don't, so be it.
Then in the end, by a certain deadline, we'll have each cook post a final presentation of the finished product in a separate thread...........and then leave the thread up for 24 hours or something like that asking for votes.
Everyone that agrees to vote should understand their Responsibility as Georgians.....and vow to place that vote.......... based on nothing personal, but solely on which cook has, in their opinion, most successfully honored the sacred and righteous tradition of smoking pig ribs while getting drunk. The End.
Rib-off, Mother frickers............

This might be good.
Plenty of time to fine-tune a ballot.......
We should also have a Cooks-Only vote. Where you have to vote for another cook's ribs besides your own.
There should be prizes for each of these distinguished honors.

Open or blind judging, it doesn't matter to me.

I don't think there's any realistic way to do it blind...We're really just making this shite up as we go anyway.
If we frick up and blow it...... we can make adjustments for Rib-off 2.0

Why can't this thread get a sticky? seems like it has a lot more interest than the BB tournament or just as much lets say<

It seems as though maybe some ingenuity could be the difference between winning and losing the Dawg Rant rib competition this year.
I can almost taste the ribs already, with a beverage of choice, of course.
You were kidding about a stickie, right?
