Coach Freeze never played football in college.

quote:
"Whenever I'd get the question, 'Where'd you played your college ball at?' it used to bother me," said new Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, who attended Southern Miss but did not play. "You knew that they expected something different than what the truth was."
Another curious aspect: Of those eight college football head coaches, seven have backgrounds that are primarily rooted on the offensive side of the ball. Is there some draw-it-up-in-the-dirt vibe that attracts the guy with the nontraditional background? "That's an interesting question," said Freeze. "My initial reaction is, probably for those guys that didn't play college football that our mental makeup is a little different. Our type of guy -- me, Leach -- I was a math major. I think that mindset is probably more geared to offense. Most of those defensive guys probably relate to their players because they once were a mean linebacker. I'm not really sure though."

Comparing yourself to Mike Leach is not a good thing unless you are a pirate.

He's been successful everywhere he has been up until Washington St.

He has overcome people's bias in the coaching profession and outperformed many people who did play in college/NFL.

Why does this make you respect him more?
Is it because he's been relatively successful despite never playing football beyond hs?
eta: NVM gotcha

His second year, he led WSU to their first bowl game since 2003 and tied for the most wins since 2003.

I remember when people were saying similar things about Charlie Weis...

Everyone should respect Hugh if they know what's good for their soul

I agree completely. Some people would say he hasn't had the same success he enjoyed at TT was my point. I agree with you I think he's done a great job.

He's been pretty successful. His issue was he was lazy at Florida and took over a Kansas team that was talentless at a school hard to win at.

What was his excuse at Notre Dame?

He's been pretty salty there. Took them to a bowl game this year.

And Notre Dame?
I will agree that playing the game on the college or pro level does not make you a better coach or more likely to be a good coach, similar to how you have "pro" coaches and "college" coaches with very few who can be successful at both levels.

You heard it here. Hugh Freeze wears makeup and adammwilson respects him for it.

(not that there's anything wrong with that)

I respected Leach in the Big 12 because he would think outside the box.
Why punt on fourth down? Why never run a WR across the middle? Why run to pass instead of pass to run?

05- Fiesta bowl (9-3)
06- Sugar bowl (10-3)
07- lost 12 players to the NFL.
08- Disaster. Not sure what happened.
He was mediocre.
