Knowing the strengths of both teams, should Auburn receive, kick, or defer should they win the toss. I think we defer.

With your D I'd probably want the ball.
Get the points on the board and hope for a couple stops.

we defered against Mizzou... I think we'd do it again, but who knows.

Great thread. Invigorating OP. Would read again.

I have a question about coin flips. Why do they ask the visiting team to pick a side? Why not just asign a visiting and home side to every coin and just flip. It's always 50/50, isn't it?

I'd say take the ball and try and get up early...but if the offense goes 3 and out and then FSU scores I'd be a little worried. It's always nice to get the ball in the 2nd half, so I say defer.

with the way FSU sorta has a tendancy to start slow (see Miami, UF and Duke games), I'd defer if I was Gus...
wonder what Jimbo would do... probably take the ball.

If there's wind, I'd rather have the wind in the 4th quarter for field goals or in the case of stadiums like Memorial/Faurot be playing towards the quieter open end in a close game.
ETA: I'm a dummy. I actually read it this time.
Cotton Bowl had team logos on each side.

Some do....each side of the Rose Bowl coin had the logo of each team. The logo facing up won the toss.

You always ALWAYS defer.
The chance to score before the half, get the ball and score again after halftime is too good to pass up. Ever.

First, never choose to "kick". In a game last year with UCLA or Stanford (I believe), the coin toss winning captain said "kick" not "defer." Thus, opposing team got to choose whether to kick or receive second half kickoff. That sucked.
Seriously, defer. Get that defense out there and tell them to make a statement. Show them you have faith in them. The chance to score before half then immediately after can also create huge momentum.

i want the ball in the second half. I feel like gus does a good job of drawing up a designed drive and putting some points on the board right after halftime

If all coin tosses were determined by a coin with team logos, wouldn't that encourage teams to aerodynamically redesign their logos for statistical advantage? For instance the Gump cursive "A" is way more aerodynamically favorable than the "LSU" logo, so would it force LSU to simplify their logo design to gain an advantage on coin tosses?
Something to think about.
