Was Jimbo Fisher ever considered for promotion? Were there any other big names that were a serious player?

IIRC, wasn't a very good year for coaching talent.

I thought Jimbo was looked at but they didn't like him from his time as the OC at LSU.

Yes Fisher was interviewed. Skip wanted a sitting head coach though
Petrino was interviewed, nutt was interviewed, Bobby Williams iirc, also DelRio was non interviewed ( sat in his car in the parking lot scared Jacksonville would fire him if he actually met with LSU) and RC Slocum was interviewed after former President Bush (1) called skip and asked a personal favor to talk to RC. Miles of course and turned out to be the right pick
If Meyer and Spurrier hadn't already been hired at UF and USC one of those two would have gotten the job, certainly Spurrier
ETA:
Huh? Jimbo was Miles OC in 05 & 06

Yes Jimbo was considered.
Saban recommended Beamer who supposedly would have come if we had given him Saban's salary but we didn't want to do it. Jimbo was interviewed as was Nutt and RC Slocum.
But in the end it came down to Petrino and Miles.

Here is a recent local article on this
for the quick version
quote:
Six face-to-face interviews were conducted from Dec. 26-30: then-LSU assistants Bobby Williams and Jimbo Fisher; Nutt, who had just finished his seventh season at Arkansas; former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum; Miles; and then-Louisville coach Bobby Petrino.

Pretty sure Miles, Nutt, Petrino, Del Rio, and Tubberville possibly?

IIRC, UAB hired Jimbo, as their HC, but bama would not let that happen. Jimbo then took the OC job at FSU.

Skip told my uncle that they asked Saban if Jimbo was ready to be a head coach, and Nick said "no". We interviewed Petrino and the interview went awful.

Skip wanted Spurrier but Saban screwed him over by waiting so late to tell him he was leaving. Just had a long article about it in the advocate.
