Losing your division and winning a title is by far the luckiest fricking thing that any team has ever had happen to them.

# of teams that have played for the national championship without winning their conference- 3

# of 2-loss teams that have played for the national championship- 1

This is stupid.

Bama's 11 title was one of a kind in the BCS era every single bit as much as LSU's 07 title was.

In 2007 there was only 1 BCS conference champ with 1 loss, so it was LSU or a bunch of other 2 loss teams. It was lucky as all hell, but LSU wasn't chosen from among other teams that accomplished more than LSU did.

Alabama played for the title in 2011 for no reason other than the fact that the Big XII champ was OSU instead of UT or OU. THE END.

Nebraska and Oklahoma both made the conference championship game though.

So really it's:
# of teams to not play in their conference championship game then play in the MNC- 1.
