This thrrrrrread again!
Bear Bryant; 5-4-1 in first season at Alabama and won his first questionable National Title in his 4th season.
Darrell Royal 6-4-1 first season at Texas wins MNC in 7th season.
Woody Hayes; 4-3-2 in first season at Ohio St. Won 4 MNC by my count.
Don James; 6-5, 5-6 first 2 seasons at Washington. Retired with a MNC and a legend.
Gary Pinkel; 4-7, 5-7 first 2 seasons at Mizzou. Now playing for a SEC title on Sat. and likely cemented his job at Mizzou for another 5 seasons.
Mark Dantonio; 7-6 at Mich. St. now he has the Spartans rolling.
VS.
Bo Schembechler; 8-3, 9-1, 11-1, 10-1, 10-0-1, 10-1 in his first 6 seasons at Michigan. Never won a MNC.
Gerry DiNardo; 7-4, 9-1 first 2 seasons at LSU then RTOFL.
Rick Neuheisel; 10-2 first year coaching, then he was gone from Colorado by the 5th season and their dirty program was exposed.
Les Miles; With Sabans players 11-2, 11-2, 11-2 and backs into the BCS game and a BCS MNC. Since? tDecline and his dirty program at Okie Light was exposed.
Will Muschamp; 7-6, 11-2, dumpster fire. If this pattern holds then 2014 is a title year for Florida. We'll see.
Jim Tressell, Urban Meyer, Chris Petersen (we'll see what he can do at Washington now), Gene Chizik, and Bob Stoops among others fall into this category too.
Then of course there is the Dooley Factor. 6-7, 5-7, 4-7, Butch. Start off mediocre and slide further into the abyss.
Bret Bielema is now on both ends of the spectrum. Started off 12-1 at wisconsin and rebuilding Arkansas now with a 3-9 record in his first season on the backs of his freshman recruits and he's turning over the roster of marginally talented players.
Time will tell.

Arkansas will clearly be poised for a winning season in 3 or 4 years.

I don't see any that went winless in conference play or 3-9.

LSU owns your dome and Les Miles is your boogeyman

Fail
Shembechler won 13 Big 10 Championships. Gary Pikel hasn't won any major conference titles through 2014.

Particularly ironic considering exactly 22 years earlier he went 11-1 in his debut season at Arky, just a four-point loss to UTx away from playing for an MNC.

Not only does Les have a better win % than Nick (81% vs 75%).. Les has a better win % with his players (81%) than Saban's players (79%)

So Bert going to leave the program marginally better and under ncaa sanctions.

I? think this thread deserves a reappearance of the Arky coach pie chart.

most likely. I think my idea of raiding the lottery for payoffs is gaining traction.

You're missing a key factor in your analysis.
That is - what was the program doing before the new coach took it over.
Mizzou was terrible for 20 years before Pinkel. So 2 bad years at the start isn't so bad.
Arkansas was pretty good recently and still has a roster full of nice talent.. yet they're just awful.

There are two kinds of coaches, sprinters and marathon runners.
Lou Holtz is a good example of a sprinter. He's a quick fix turnaround guy but he has problems in the long term.
Steve Spurrier is a marathon runner ... very CEO oriented, attention to detail, long term goals and plans, motivated by doing firsts.
You hire based upon what you need.
Beamer at Va Tech is another good example of a marathon type coach, a distance runner. Bobby Bowden is another one at FSU.
The problem when choosing a coach is that you want a quick turnaround, but they rarely happen, and you have to gauge your fan base's patience.
Vol fans, for instance, wanted instance success immediately after Fulmer, but their expectations have been lowered to the point where they are now into anything for the long haul within reason.
