Good or bad for the university?
quote:
This data puts Alabama just ahead of Auburn in out-of-state enrollment in the fall 2013 freshman class, with Auburn drawing 37 percent of its freshman class from other states. The majority of Auburn’s out-of-state students also came from Georgia.
The University of Georgia fell behind Auburn and Alabama in out-of-state representation in its fall 2013 class, boasting only 15 percent of the new enrollees.

Well in ways it can be good because the state does charge them more so on a per head basis they make more the for the UA system. But the lottery state numbers make sense, you don't get into UGA or UT being an average student unless you know someone.

As an in-state student at UA, I enjoy the diversity.

Assuming this means Texas. I know a lot of average students from Memphis who went to Tennessee.

It helps with the future alumni base as well

Good. Very, very good.

Id say it's good mainly because of future alumni connections.

I really don't see how it's bad.

It can also explain some of the bad football attendance. I know I have some friends from Georgia who are still big UGA fans.

It's good.
They pay double or triple tuition. In this era of budget cuts, the money is needed.
Having a broader alumni base is good--and if some of them stay in Alabama, it helps our economy.

I will say that it angers me that a lot of these yankees coming in don't know our team history. If it hasn't happened in the last 2 years, they're just like "I don't know what you're talking about."

I also agree about a diverse campus being nice. After spending most of my life in Birmingham, it was nice to come to UA and meet people from all over.
I read somewhere that UA lead the SEC in students defaulting on student loans, though. Could that be a result of all the out-of-stater's coming in? seems like it'd make sense that more kids paying out-of-state tuition would mean more kids taking on student loans. An unfortunate statistic to be associated with, but I guess that's the ugly nature of getting a college education these days. If the University is going to exert so much effort bringing these kids in, it ought to do more to take care of them, though.

I haven't seen that, but the university does enough in the form of scholarships to take care of out of state students. I got to spend my first 2 years here basically free, but my grades dipped and we had to pay. It was ultimately my fault, so I don't see why the University should have to step in pay for students who chose to go somewhere they can't afford.

Hell yeah! Us foreigners taking over!
Kicking the natives out of their own state school.

Very true.
I too lost a scholly to a year of screwing around
I remember my last year at UA there were a few kids who committed suicide in their dorms, and I think at least one of them was from out-of-state. That's not something the school can ultimately control too much, but I hope the school and the housing people are doing more to build a sense of community for these kids. The suites in those new dorms seemed like they'd be pretty damn lonely if you didn't know anyone.

I don't see how this could be a bad thing. OOS pays more money, increases alumni base, and brings tax money and educated people to the state. It seems like a win win situation for everyone involved. How is UA being 60% oos compared to Auburn's 37% being "just ahead" though?
The only thing I worry about is if the school can keep these numbers going after Saban leaves and the football team undoubtedly starts to return to Earth. I know the school is more than football, but I do think a lot of students see the football program as a definite plus in deciding to come here. If less students start coming here, will the school have the finances to support all of their new investments on campus?

It's a great thing. More out-of-state students, more money.

Great for the University because of all the non scholarship students paying out of state tuiton, which should be raised even more IMO, and good for the city because of the amount of housing being built along with more money being spent in the city.
