What caused Tenn to fall low for so long (and when will they rise again)?

Seemed like there was a time when Tennessee was pretty much a perennial top level team. They've really fallen on hard times.

What the heck happened? Keeping Fulmer too long? Getting rid of Fulmer too soon? Hiring that Kiffin guy that abandoned them only to tank USC west? Something else.

And do they have any legitimate prospects of returning back to the top anytime soon? Just seems strange to see them continue to struggle for so long.

Well, Butch doing in 7 games what Dooley couldn't do in 3 years plus the #2 recruiting class in the country may meet that criteria.

It's the "curse of Fulmer" that has plagued UT.

When Fulmer sold his soul to the devil in memphis is when the curse kicked in.

Fulmer got lazy and slowly turned an elite program into a mediocre program. Kiffin follows and fricks us over which led to the biggest mistake which was Dooley.

Yes, Butch is a recruiting monster for Tennessee. We haven't recruited this well since Fulmer had us rolling in the late 90's/early 2000's

For real? Granted he was bad, but if Tennessee was trying to get to the holy grail they would have lost a few dozen heads by now by the whirly blades.

I think they've finally found a coach in Butch. Give him a couple of years to see what he can do. I didn't think much of the hire initially, but he's turning me into a believer.

They'll be back next year. Dont you read their daily "our recruiting class is the best ever" thread on the SEC recruiting board as if no other SEC schools recruit well??

I think Butch is the right coach for them. Good recruiter and the win over SCar was good and something they can build on.

I thought Dooley had potential. Guess not in hindsight thought.

For awhile I think they were really reaching for recruits as far as qualifying and staying out of trouble. I know they signed a Lutcher kid several years ago after it had become pretty dang clear he would't qualify. And then there was the guy that they got from LA that got into problems with the law.

Hopefully the classes they are signing now will be there long term.

Bad coaching hires. More than any major school it is important for UT to get a coach that knows what it takes at UT. The almost HAVE to have a UT guy.

Tough time to be a Vol fan. "Wait til next season" get more, and more painful as the years click by. Unfortunately, "next season" looks pretty bleak. The Vols will be gutted by graduation on the OL, and defensive front seven.

They have a rising star at QB. But this year's freshman will have his plate full as a sophomore behind a new OL. Even if all the breaks go their way, I can't see them being any better than 4th, or 5th in the SEC East next year.

I think that Jones is the real deal as a coach, but UT fans will have to be patient. This rebuilding job is gonna take time.

Dooley had a 17-20 record coaching in the WAC. At least Butch has some sort of track record as a winning coach albeit riding on Brian Kelly's coattails.

Bad recruiting started with Fulmer about 10 years ago - patience, grasshopper, it's changing now

With the recruiting classes he's bringing in he'll have UT competing for the East pretty soon. He's a good coach and I'm almost certain that he'll have Richt-esque 9-3, 10-2 season at the minimum pretty much every year.

But will he take UT to the next level and win championships? We'll have to wait and see about that. Yes, I'd love UT to recover and go back to having post 2002 Fulmer-esque 9, 10 win seasons again but eventually the goal is to compete for national championships every year.
