CLEMSON – Due to a lack of depth in Clemson’s secondary, the freshmen must step up and play this season. Ready or not. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables met with the media after Friday’s practice and said that he would be relying on over half of the freshman class to contribute, even though in a perfect world they would be redshirting this season. “We have no depth so we knew going in that some of the young guys would have to play. Ready or not here we come,” Venables said Friday afternoon. “Half [will have to play]. We have to stay healthy with the other guys. You would like to redshirt as many as you can that maybe aren’t ready, because they lack strength or size, but I don’t think we’ll be afforded that opportunity.” With names like MacKensie Alexander and Jayron Kearse, Korrin Wiggins is kind of the forgotten man; however, Wiggins is seeing a lot of time at nickel back, while Kearse is playing safety. “He’s [Wiggins] playing more of the nickel spot and we’ve got Jayron looking at safety more,” Venables said. “Wiggins has really done well there. He’s shown a really good feel to play in space. He has got good instincts and ball skills. He’s physical.”

Bobo and Murray are licking their chops.

Those are not the words of a coach that has much (or any) confidence in his secondary. This is playing to what I heard about a week ago, regarding their secondary.

Quick notes from Saturday's scrimmage
quote:

*Linebacker Spencer Shuey and RB Tyshon Dye were in yellow jerseys for the scrimmage.

* Freshman safety Jayron Kearse suffered a separated shoulder in the scrimmage.

* Tigers will start introducing Georgia and the gameplan for the Bulldogs on Monday.

* Robert Smith, Travis Blanks, and MacKensie Alexander were also held out of the scrimmage for injuries. Blanks and Smith could have possibly played but were held out to be safe.

* Alexander has regressed with the groin injury that he suffered before the start of fall camp. He has not be able to practice much during fall camp.

* Dabo Swinney said Rod McDowell has earned the starting RB position for the Georgia game. More coming soon.

Yeah... about a week ago, one of my buddys was telling me that the report out of clemson's camp was the secondary had no idea what they were doing and looked horrid. Now, I know they have had a rash of injuries but there was little to no experience there to begin with. I'll be keeping an eye out for updates on their secondary.

What this sounds like to me is a DC making excuses in advance when his D does not perform. A little preemptive "don't fire me" for when his D is just as shitty as it always was at OU.
