CLEMSON – Due to a lack of depth in Clemson’s secondary, the freshmen must step up and play this season. Ready or not. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables met with the media after Friday’s practice and said that he would be relying on over half of the freshman class to contribute, even though in a perfect world they would be redshirting this season. “We have no depth so we knew going in that some of the young guys would have to play. Ready or not here we come,” Venables said Friday afternoon. “Half [will have to play]. We have to stay healthy with the other guys. You would like to redshirt as many as you can that maybe aren’t ready, because they lack strength or size, but I don’t think we’ll be afforded that opportunity.” With names like MacKensie Alexander and Jayron Kearse, Korrin Wiggins is kind of the forgotten man; however, Wiggins is seeing a lot of time at nickel back, while Kearse is playing safety. “He’s [Wiggins] playing more of the nickel spot and we’ve got Jayron looking at safety more,” Venables said. “Wiggins has really done well there. He’s shown a really good feel to play in space. He has got good instincts and ball skills. He’s physical.”

Bobo and Murray are licking their chops.

Those are not the words of a coach that has much (or any) confidence in his secondary. This is playing to what I heard about a week ago, regarding their secondary.

Some of the guys in that article had some probs in their scrimmage this a.m....

Quick notes from Saturday's scrimmage

*Linebacker Spencer Shuey and RB Tyshon Dye were in yellow jerseys for the scrimmage.

* Freshman safety Jayron Kearse suffered a separated shoulder in the scrimmage.

* Tigers will start introducing Georgia and the gameplan for the Bulldogs on Monday.

* Robert Smith, Travis Blanks, and MacKensie Alexander were also held out of the scrimmage for injuries. Blanks and Smith could have possibly played but were held out to be safe.

* Alexander has regressed with the groin injury that he suffered before the start of fall camp. He has not be able to practice much during fall camp.

* Dabo Swinney said Rod McDowell has earned the starting RB position for the Georgia game. More coming soon.

I was just coming to post that. Looks like they will be relying on walk one for our game.

We are going to DESTROY them.

Yeah... about a week ago, one of my buddys was telling me that the report out of clemson's camp was the secondary had no idea what they were doing and looked horrid. Now, I know they have had a rash of injuries but there was little to no experience there to begin with. I'll be keeping an eye out for updates on their secondary.

We've got similar issues with our secondary in regards to experience but from all reports our guys are actually picking it up and playing very well.

Not what I've heard. What I've heard is that everyone worth a shite is beat up just as bad as Clemson, and the fact Swann has to play Star because of JHC suspension, we are also playing freshmen, and not the freshmen we necessarily wanted to start. We are in the exact same position against good Clemson receivers and Boyd.

We are in no way "in the exact same place" as Clemson. Our LB's and especially DLine are far superior to anything Clemson has, plus we are 3 deep.

Read more practice reports then. Everything I've heard from scrimmages is that our young db's are further along than expected.

Don't you think DLine & Lb's will help mask the secondary? Vs Clemson where they are another weakness for us to exploit. Plus I disagree with he premise of secondary vs secondary. We have far more depth than Clemson.

Still think it will be a pretty close game. Hope I'm wrong. Anywhere from a 3 pt to 14 pt game is what I'm expecting. Hope UGA'S D surprises everyone though

No, not in a no-huddle spread offense with a dual threat qb like Boyd, who actually had more yards rushing than Keith Marshall and a top ten completion percentage as well.

Boyd is no joke.

When they spread out 5 receivers from sideline to sideline, there's no help from Tray Matthews or Damien Swann, they are out of the play for all intents and purposes, and who picks up that fifth receiver, Deloach? Puhlease...

So when Boyd decides to make a break for it, there is pretty much nothing stopping him for 8 yards.

This is going to be a brutal game for UGA's defense.

SCU and LSU found a way to hold Clemson- SCU to 17 points. If Clemson scores in the low 30's or below we win. And I don't see them getting there, could be wrong.

LEt me add, I also thought the Clemson talk about heat and humidity was ridiculous, until I realized what they were actually saying is that a hurry-up no-huddle offense against a big boy defense while they are losing a pint of water a minute, they will start cramping and fatigueing very quickly, and the shitty thing about HUNH is that you can't necessarily rely on your depth mid-drive unless you burn time outs or train players to feign injury to allow subsitutions... which I hope like hell we do.

SCU ran a 4-2-5 so they had 5 speedy defensive backs to cover the spread, and complete monsters on the DL with Quarles, Sutton, and Clowney. Taj didn't have a chance to throw the ball because the receivers were well covered by formation alone. The 4 linemen collapsed the pocket inside of 2 seconds on pretty much every play and the two linebackers just had to stand there and pretty much spy Boyd.

Our defense isn't set up that way. Maybe 3 of our front 7 are going to be All Americans, and we'll get the same result.

But I just don't know.

That's the key to beating clemson's hurry-up spread offense. If you can get pressure on Boyd with 4 guys and the rest of the guys are covering, then that collapses their whole system. If you give Boyd time, he'll find someone open or take off to run. If you can get to him before he's complete his checks, he'll end up on his back.

Clowney set the Death Valleyeast stadium record for Sacks in a single game last year with 4.5.

And that brings us full circle, we don't necessarily have 5 speedy competent guys to play secondary db in that game. 3 maybe.....

JHC suspension is huge.

Yeah I think their defense is average, but their offense is lethal. Our best defense in this game has to be the offense.

Which gets back to ball control and running the ball...regardless of how much we want to throw it. If Murray is all geeked up, like has a tendency to do, the last think we need is Bobo dialing up a bunch of pass plays and going 3 and out with overthrown balls all night. I watched the replay of the UGA/FL game that recently came on and it DID NOT make me feel good about Clemson.

This one has me very worried. That place is going to every bit as rocking as USCe was last year and we typically suck in high profile openers (or it seems to me like we have). This is ACC vs SEC pride and they're going to be ready.
