I wouldn't.
UK & UT have both consistently been in the top 5 in the NCAA for attendance over the past 6 years. Besides UT dropping back to #7 last year. Missouri didn't break the top 30
Since 2006 we've been ranked:
2012: #7
2011: #5
2010: #4
2009: #4
2008: #4
2007: #4
2006: #5
Missouri over the same time period:
2012: #32
2011: #34
2010: #40
2009: #47
2008: Didn't crack top 60
2007: Didn't crack top 60
2006: Didn't crack top 60

I call bullshite...but stats don't lie (unless you fudged the numbers).

Since you both are stats guys, where does Mizzou rank in relation to the rest of the SEC?
For me it is not a stats thing more of a going to games and seeing crowds. Winning helps and some schools crowds go up and down with the wins. On the women's side the Vols are pretty solid and constant. Crowds are important because it looks good for the SEC on TV and TV is where the dollars come from for all 14 schools to share. We are all in this together and it is always good to see many SEC schools be tops in attendance outside of just football.
You already follow the men, as for the Lady Tigers they are in the bottom half but not the worst. State just hired TAMU's assistant and Ole Miss just hired UK's assistant so both programs should be getting better. While the Lady Vols get the press the entire conference is pretty solid I think at least half the conference has been to a Final Four [UT = 18, LSU and UGA = 5, AU = 3, with UAT, UAF, and VU = 1. Kentucky and South Carolina both may get a Final Four in the next few years so the SEC may be the deepest and most competitive conference in the nation.

Those stats don't even make sense. You quote by average per game, but then it looks like total numbers by total games? I'm confused.
And if that's the case, it's flat wrong. The arena's aren't that big. And Mizzou definitely had more than 27,929 people attend games last year. That's crazy.
In the 2012-13 Missouri averaged 11,830 in home attendance, with total being 201,117. Here's a link...

That's what I am getting at, Semo. I like Grits subtle (or perhaps not so subtle) jabs at Mizzou on the TN Board when he's not even a TN fan.
Odd that Grits is so obsessed with Mizzou on the Tennessee Board when this thread was an attempt to be cordial with the Tennessee fans.
Grits...what school do you follow anyhow? Arkansas? Who? I'm not sure I trust the logo next to your username, but if the answer is Arkansas...it completely makes sense.

I like totals but NCAA does the data by average so I posted by the NCAA method. Since the NCAA likes money this makes sense as average draw means better data sampling when seeding teams because as you can see in the UK mens numbers they only played 15 games at home. If they had played say 4 more and averaged 22K then that bumps UK's total @ home by close to another 100K. If you have never seen the UK men or the UT women travel I would suggest you do and you can see firsthand what I mean. I was in St. Louis for the WNCAA FF and UT had the most fans in the stands (and the Lady Vols were not in that Final Four). As you get used to the SEC you will come to understand this.
quote:
And Mizzou definitely had more than 27,929 people attend games last year.
Go back and re read the posts. Data is broken down into MEN and WOMEN. In many conferences this is not a big deal but when you see UT-W, UK-W, and TAMU-W out drawing many NCAA men's teams it begins to hit home. I attended SEC women's games at these places and they sell out. Imagine Mizzou Areana (~15K) selling out for a regular season women's basketball game or Mizzou Arena putting SOLD OUT for a W gymnastics meet with another SEC team. The 27,929 is for the women that means Mizzou drew all season what UT did in about 2 games. This is why attendance numbers matter as bottom schools drag the averages down and small crowds do not look good on ESPN broadcasts.
quote:
That's crazy.
Welcome to the SEC dear, where crazy and sports passion are one in the same. It is a key ingredient on why the SEC is so successful across all of college sports and not just football.
quote:
total being 201,117
I was on this LINK which shows 200,022 total for 18 games and an average of 11,112 so that is only about 1,000 difference which is not big enough to argue over or lose sleep about.

When they were built in the 1970's both TB and Rupp were #1 and #2 in the entire USA for size of their basketball arenas. It took years for the Dean Dome to break 20K and the Cards finally broke 20K a few years ago. In fact until Rupp was built Vandy's gym was a consistent Top 10 in attendance in the USA and they still draw well considering the age of that facility.

Vol fans can skip to the bottom
Killz, they are facts not jabs. The difference is you are looking at the facts then trying to make excuse to defend them. This is what got the whole mess stirred up last spring because folks dig their head in the sand instead of reading what is said and getting up to speed with fellow conference members. Grow a set and take responsibility for where you are falling short then do things to fix them instead of making excuses. This makes the whole conference better. Maybe this is foreign coming from the Big 8 and B12 but it is not had to understand.
This past march some Mizzou poster asked the other SEC fans to attend the NCAA regional game Mizzou was playing in to support them. I did and found the Tigers had the worst attendance at the venue and said so later on. Instead of saying the Tiger fans base should have done better and apologized to the other SEC folks who went to cheer for Mizzou (I saw at least UT, UK, VU, and Bama colors in Rupp that night) they took the defensive and started making excuses. The more I tried to to explin this simple concept the more folks started using the troll excuse to sidestep the original issue.
As for TN I have family in the state and was just there last week and will probably be back next week. I am fairly sure I have been following the Vols longer than you have been alive and I have fond memories of Vols past and present. I have been to Knoxville when the Vols are playing and I have travelled to see the Vols on the road which I am guessing is more than you can say for yourself.
I follow all of them and have been to football games where crowds were over 100K. The smallest crowd was probably a Rifle match Ole Miss was competing in that had about 5-10 folks spectators. My current Hog icon reflects the positive thread that was up to have me added to that board but most of the rest of the time it is a USA flag (because there is no SEC logo to choose from) or a specific SEC team when they are in a big game. During the CWS I switched to the State icon until they were eliminated to show solidarity. I do the same with my avatar as it usually represents a specific SEC schools food or local dish. Right now TAMU is in the rotation so that is a Sodolak's is in the rotation. At some point I will have a Mizzou icon and a Mizzou food avatar so will you find the same fault then?
Banter is great but getting respect in this conference means showing up, supporting the teams, and taking the lumps when you lose. It is simple and most folks can respect that. You can't get a rivalry going by talking on the internet just like you can't hold land without the infantry. At some point you have to show up in force and plant your flag in the opponents territory. Become proactive and interactive and folks will respect you but if you sit there and act like you are at the top of the heap and have no hardware to show for it you are just the butt of everybody's joke. Do something great in the real world to get respect from the other guy and then come back and be an internet tough guy.
If you are on a Vol board working on developing a real life rivalry use your creative skills and energy to accomplish something like getting all your Mizzou board pals together and getting a van or bus trip together to attend a Vols basketball game. Immerse yourself in the live culture that is the SEC. This is much better that telling a bunch of Vol fans how much better your team is than theirs when the facts do not support it. Do you see this at all or are you just going to keep trolling because that is not accomplishing anything positive.
Like the other thread I am done with you on this one. If you really want to have a serious discussion post a list of questions on the Mizzou board and I will get back to you.
Apology to Vols fans for response length. Killz may be trolling but at least he can't say he hasn't gotten the backstory.

Regardless, this conversation has no place on the Tennessee board. Obviously, they have better basketball attendance then Mizzou, especially when the women's games are factored in.
The team boards are meant to be focused on that team - in this case, Tennessee. This was a great thread. Until it got derailed into an attendance smack-down. Apologies to Tennessee, this kind of discussion is best held on the Rant.

Mizzou is closer to Lexington, than Knoxville. Both have traditionally strong basketball programs, and MO and KY share a border. That is probably a better place for you to find a Rival within the East.
