Poor, Johnny. He wants to do what's right at all times, but these people just "find their way" into his life. He has no control over the amount of exposure they have to him. He's the victim. Always the victim. This fall - whenever it may be - is gonna be hard.
I worked with youth for 7 years. My response to "my kid just fell in with the wrong crowd" has always been "Your kid IS the wrong crowd".

I don't think aTm is liable for a damn thing at this point.
They've covered their asses, they've tried to get JFF counseling and provided (even mandated) he get help for any personal issues he may have.
They've educated him AND his entire family on NCAA compliance for probably the last year. Hell, I'd imagine aTm compliance has had to spend way more time vetting JFF & his family's activities than they have for any other student athlete at the school.
Change 'for any other student athlete' to 'all the other student athletes combined' and you're spot on.
It certainly looks like they've bent over backwards to keep him on the right path but he and his people seem determined to not let that happen.

In the context of a message board, that's just funny.
In the context of real life, I salute you, sir.

My dad always said you are known by the company you keep. You hang around with trash, then you are the trash.
I live on this board, so I'm the trashiest.

According to the ESPNMag article.
Yeah, I don't understand this. The new Thompson article on "Uncle Nate" makes it sound like the parents, at least Johnny's mom, were uneasy having Finch around their son, but, this quote makes it appear they wanted him to handle JFF's business. Which is it?

Haha. To be honest I probably shared it in the context of speaking in general terms to a crowd, not face to face with a parent. Some parents be crazy you know.

The aTm coaching staff had to know about Nate though. After all, he sat down at a table with JM's QB coach (Spavital) to discuss JM, and told him "I'd love to work with you."
I wonder what that coach was thinking at the time?
That he was looking at a huge problem?
And just another possible take on ESPN. If they are not very sure of their sources, the way they're covering this is opening them to a libel suit. It's almost like they're daring the Manziels to prove them wrong. I think they're very confident in what they're reporting. And it's not just ESPN, it's being covered everywhere. The sharks smell blood in the water, and they're circling. Has the NCAA fed them some info? Maybe. But they're really digging. And they're being very bold in reporting it.
Maybe ESPN has another agenda - to try and force NCAA changes on certain rules. And Manziel was arrogant enough to flaunt his activities and set himself up to be just a casualty.

Uncle Nate should enroll at Ole miss and buddy up with RN.

How so?
Has espn said "johnny did __" or have they said "we've been told by sources that johnny did ___"
Or do you not think that the in house attorneys for ESPN know about defamation suits?
Pretty sure johnny has made himself a public figure, so unless espn knows it's false and is reporting it anyway, they're fine. I'm ok with a litigious society, but not one who fails to understand the concepts underwhich they believe they can sue.

That's another great one. I also say, "what your friends are today is what you'll be tomorrow." True story.

Yes, I think the in-house legal staff for ESPN knows what they can and can't do quite well.
And I believe they said Johnny told a broker he wouldn't take additional cash for personalized inscriptions because he'd done that before and it led to questions.
They're on this hard. When there is plenty of other stuff to cover leading up to the start of the season. If this was June, that would be different, but it's August. I think they're very confident.

Exactly.
Use that (or a variation of) with my students quite a bit.

I get the feeling that Momma Manziel hasn't ever approved to cared for JM's lifestyle. She didn't want him getting tattoo's because she thinks it doesn't correspond with Texas values. She cried when she found out JM had gotten inked, she refused to look at it. She panicked when she found out JM flew to Toronto for a weekend with Drake & his crew.
I doubt Momma has much say so in that household. Paul and Johnny are pretty big personalities that could easily bulldoze anything Momma wants/says.

yet you think they're opening themselves up to a lible suit?
You're simpley wrong on that assumption.
I mean in the loosest sense yes, they are open to a suit because anyoen can file anything, but in a practical, I assume the way you mean it, in that it would have more than a snowballs chance in hell, they aren't.

A UGA player and an Alabama player go to a party in Miami. UGA player gets 4 games, Bama player gets 2.
Dareus got two games for going to the Miami party. Green got four games for selling a jersey, not for going to the Miami party. Dareus certainly received illegal benefits...not cash. Green peddled a jersey for cash. Green didn't go to the Miami party.

Yeah, I definitely know that. But even if it was just speaking to a crowd, that still took some balls. Well done. And again,
