POSITION BREAKDOWN: AUBURN CORNERBACKS IMPRESS
AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn cornerbacks impressed defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson throughout spring practice, and have a chance to re-enforce that favorable impression when fall practice begins Friday.
If they do, they would be the comeback story of the preseason, considering they didn't record an interception last season.
How far have they come already?
"They've made the majority of our big plays on defense," Johnson said after spring practice.
"That's probably been one of the brightest spots overall."
Johnson juggled his secondary in the spring, moving some players around and creating the hybrid "Star" safety position as part of 4-2-5 defense. Johnson moved Josh Holsey from cornerback to safety in one of the moves to shore up that position, but he could move back if needed.
"On film…that's good stuff right there," Johnson said.
Auburn had two interceptions last season — one by a linebacker and one by a safety. But Johnson says he won't judge his cornerbacks on that stat.
"When you start the conversation on interceptions, I don't start that conversation with defensive backs, I start it with pressure on the quarterback," he said.
With that, here's a look at Auburn's cornerbacks:
Chris Davis (5-11, 200, Sr.) Has started 16 games despite missing four games last season and two the year before with injuries. Made 60 of his 118 career tackles in 2011.
Jonathon Mincy (5-10, 200, Jr.) 15 career starts, including 11 last season. His 57 tackles were fifth on the team and tops among cornerbacks last year.
Jonathan Jones (5-10, 180, So.) Started three games as a freshman last year. Had 13 tackles, including seven against Ole Miss.
Ryan White (5-11, 196, Sr.) Started the opener last year and had seven tackles, but didn't start again and finished with 11 tackles. Has 34 career tackles. Holder for field goals and extra points. Former high school quarterback threw a pass for Gus Malzahn in 2011.
Kamryn Melton (5-10, 173, Fr.) Had 64 tackles as a senior and 63 tackles as a junior at Dothan High School. Had two interceptions last season.

According to 247's insider notes,
Sources say Marshall is a strong contender for starting job (Shocker I know)
Lawson and Daniel will most likely see a good bit of playing time this year especially on 3rd down.
Expect Adams to redshirt.
King and Flowers are looking at significant playing time this year.

I really hope King can step up and take one of the safety spots. I just don't feel good about most of returning guys.
And I like Holsey better at corner. I hope he starts on the other side of Davis.

Adams is pretty raw despite his athletic ability. A redshirt year could let him develop into the next Nick Fairley-type DL.

Interesting about Adams.
The part about Elijah Daniel was more shocking to me. I thought he would redshirt.

I think both of these guys can give us some more physicality in our back 7. Flowers has been one of favorite recruits since he committed. I just think he is a perfect fit for the weakside backer.
I am curious to see who starts at the field safety. So far I feel like we have plenty of guys capable of playing the star and boundary safety but besides Whitehead not sure who plays that back spot

Sure a redshirt year would help anyone, but uhh.. we need help now. Our defensive line was turrible last year. He must be really over weight or something, because otherwise he would be competing for a job

The depth at end isn't as good as the depth at tackle... at least in my opinion.
Adams is raw and played some pretty weak competition in HS... plus, it's easier a little easier to contribute right away at DE than DT.
Still, I'm not convinced Adams is a redshirt, but we'll see... if he's as talented as everyone says he is, he's not gonna be here 5 years anyway... why not play him now and get some experience under his belt?

Adams, like everyone else, lost a lot of weight over the summer. His high school shots compared to the photo when he's wearing the #1 jersey is pretty dramatic. It's a wide-angle photo but you can definitely notice the difference. I was really hoping to see the guy play this year. If the red shirts I guess that's a good sign.

Adams played A ball in Ga...he is not ready. He needs to sit.

that's definitely my weak spot. I'm only familiar with him from the video.

247 ranks our defensive players like this:
1. Dee Ford
2. Jermaine Whitehead
3. Demetruce McNeaal
4. Justin Garrett
5. Chris Davis
6. Gabe Wright
7. Carl Lawson
8. Kenneth Carter

Whitehead and McNeal in the top 3? Am I missing something here?
Posted on 7/31/13 at 1:44 pm to Weagle25
Mcneal ahead of Chris Davis?? And No Mincy? They obviously see more than I do but that's hard to believe right now.

yeah, I don't necessarily buy all that... but a 'top 10' list is pretty useless right now based on what we rolled out last year.
Garrett should be in the top 3, Chris Davis and Dee Ford have experience and are team leaders... outside of that, I don't see anyway to rank guys.

Looks like they're on crack.
Ford,Garrett,Wright,Davis sound right. I could see Lawson, but he has yet to put on the pads yet.

JW is an odd one. He's plenty athletic and we've all heard he's supposed to be relatively intelligent. Why he hasn't been able to put it all together yet is a mystery to me.

Whitehead also a clear starter at one of the safety positions right now... so he obviously did some things right this spring.
He's just gotta prove it on the field this fall... same goes for every single person on the team... which makes these pre-camp lists ridiculous.

Anbody want to fill me in on which players are locked into a starting role and the positions that aren't who are the main contenders?
I got Dismukes, Robinson, Slade and Prosch on offense and Ford, Garrett, Whitehead, Davis and Mincy on defense as the guys who seem to be pretty set as starters barring an injury.
