In reference to Geoff Collins. Also said that as co-DC, Collins had a lot of say on last year's defense.

Chalk up another win for Gus then.

What kind of defense does Miss State run anyway?

I don't know, but the old DC was made the scapegoat for last season's collapse and their shiny wire of hope was supposed to be the new DC who won't call anything like the old one.

Make this the official Dan Muffin presser thread and include a pic of Dan Muffin.

Dan also just said that there's a clowney on every SEC team

you can use the same scheme but gameplan and play-call better.
Most of college football is using some variation of a four man front... it's the coaching that matters.

Only sheep thought otherwise anyway

we ran the same scheme from 2010-13 I guess. the defense really only sucked dick in 2012.

That's true, I didn't include the rest of the statement where he said that he doesn't expect things to change much on that side of the ball. And again, reiterated that Collins was very involved in last year's defense.
Just doesn't sound quite like the 180 that many local grinders are talking about.
Very calm presser for Senor Muffin. Didn't even use TSUN, though he did say the "other school".

Playcalling and pass rushing has to get better. No scheme overhaul is going to change that overnight.

exactly... the scheme seemed to work fine before last season. I don't think it's illogical to think a change in playcalling and gameplanning will result in a return to solid defense.
Bringing in someone totally new and/or hiring a totally different defensive staff could work well... or could turn into a total disaster (see UT last year... went from top 30 defense to dumpster fire with a terrible DC hire).

Even under Crooms we had solid defenses, our offense was just ranked in the 100s. And then under Mullen our defenses have generally outshined the offense with the exception of last season, which was weird. Quay Evans, Nick James, and Denico Autry need to step up for us to return to form.

And nothing was going to change from Manny Diaz to Chris Wilson either(who was his coDC before and very involved in the defense and scheming). Until it did change bigtime -- even when the defense was still formidable in 2011(thanks Fletcher).

considering we open with Ok State- why would he say we were going to do things very differently to tip his hand?
Posted on 7/17/13 at 12:20 pm to CoonassBulldog
I look for the players to be the ones to tip the hand. Mainly McKinney... maybe a little bit from Eulls...
Ultimately, our "scheme" didn't change from Manny to Wilson -- and I don't expect it to from Wilson to Collins. The playcalling was night and day different though -- and I expect Collins to be alot more Diaz than Wilson(he's actually said this alot in interviews)
