The numbers may match but the competition was not equal

In the Big 8 the Tigers just had to beat OU and UNL
In the Big 12 the Tigers just had to beat OU, UNL, and UTx

Vanderbilt not only had to beat the current SEC schools but former SEC schools :

Georgia Tech who had 3 MNC's before moving to the ACC
Tulane who built the Sugar Bowl and was an early power
Sewanee who had the Iron Men

In short the Dores had deeper and tougher competition.

Irrelevant. They never won that conference anyway. Although inferior, the weak competition you mention was still too tall of a task for the "Show Me" Yankee Doodle Dandies
