The Great Shabazz

For those on here with Pine Bluff ties, like myself, Basil Shabazz was and is a legend. Arguably the greatest high school athlete in Arkansas sports history. 4-sport all-american his Senior year. Gatorade National HS Football POY. Too many HS State Championships to count, but he had at least one every year in either football, baseball, basketball or track. Still holds many records in track and football that may never be broken.
Not the best student. Struggled to get into college, and instead to a $150k signing bonus to play for the Cardinals organization after high school. Made it to AAA for a brief period but mostly languished in AA. By his mid-20s his baseball career was clearly not progessing towards the majors. He tried a comeback in his true sport, football at UAPB, but hurt his neck in his first season back and retired for good.
Back in the early 2000s ESPN did a 30/30 on Torii Hunter who played in the same outfield as Basil (Basil played center, Torri rightfield). Basically Torii said he was super lucky to be where he was because the scouts only found him because there would be 20-30 scouts at every game watching Shabazz.
I was in jr high during this period and remember it vividly - including Shabazz's 5 TDs vs. Texarkana in the state championship game his senior year. I was there. It was ridiculous.
I haven't seen or heard anything Shabazz since that 30/30 show about 10 years ago. Until today, when a buddy from PB sent me this gem. Enjoy.

hate to say this.... Looks like he would've been a fumble machine with that ball carrying in today's ball.

I guess since he ran a sub 4.3 40 they didn't focus too much on fundamentals w/ him. Probably if given the stucture of big time college football he'd been toting that rock like Trent Richardson.

Didn't he get released from AAA after a drug related incident involving either his or Tori Hunters dad?

His name is still said with great reverence around the state.

Where you from, dawg? Pea Ridge? GFY.. Growing up there in the late 70s/80s was great. A far cry from that dumpsville it is now.

Shabazz = Best I've ever seen in H.S.
I'm 3 years older than Shabazz so saw a lot of him. D-Mac is the closest thing I've seen since.

I was present the night Shabazz toyed with Texarkana in the state championship game. Probably the greatest individual sports performance I will ever see, and that includes watching Corliss Williamson vs. Jason Kidd in the King Cotton Classic Championship game (also in Pine Bluff).
And yes, Pine Bluff used to be a wonderful city, a great sports town - not only high school sports, but the Legion Baseball program was second to none. World Series were held at Taylor Field. Two Bassmasters Classics were held there. The King Cotton Basketball tournament was one of the premier tournaments in the country, bringing in teams such as DeMatha, Oak Hill, etc.
Heck, even Elvis played a couple of concerts there at the convention center. A nationally televised HBO Special concert was filmed there. There was a time PB was great.
