Other than yhe DC TV market
I have a friend who was talking SEC expansion and he said he is hearing serious talk that Virginia will join the SEC along with another ACC school as soon as the 2014 season.
My question is WHY?
UVA has a good baseball program, average basketball program and below average football team
I just don't see them as a good fit

Can't we just kick Mizzou out?

They have a fertile recruiting ground and being in the SEC may be enough to push recruits who go elsewhere to UVA.

Better than mizz. They bring Richmond and dc and the tidewater area.
Academic powerhouse compared to most of the sec as well.
I don't see them in the sec though.

Nothing. At all. Other than being a top-tier public school.

They have better instate talent than Arkansas/Tennessee/Kentucky in Football. Joining th eSEC may lock that down.
They have had a great Baseball program for the past 3-4 years.
They would be in the top 6 in basketball in the SEC

Sure wouldn't hurt the academic prestige of the conference.

That sounds like something the SEC brings to them, not the other way around

Massive endowment
AAU school
VA markets
pair for adding UNC (better than adding UNC + Dook)
good baseball
good basketball before Duke got hot with coach K
Flagship for state of VA
Rival for Ole Miss in the east for fancy tailgating
Slive is a UVA alumni
"up yours" to B1G as Delaney covets them
I can think of some more but that is all I have right now.

Main thing I can think of that they bring to the conference is academics, I suppose. As a school, they are one of the top public schools in the nation bar none. I think in 2013 they were ranked 2nd for public universities, 24th overall.

Apart from that and what Bundy said, I can't think of much more. Might be a move to bolster the conference image academically.

Mizzou is designed after Jefferson's vision for UVA. I guess that's cool.

Do people really care about this?

Most sec schools do not care about academics.

If they don't, they should.
It will take a couple decades, but a degree from Georgia doesn't have near the prestige as a degree from Michigan, Penn State, or even Wisconsin.
Big Ten is just a better conference academic wise, it trickles down.

Are they any worse than state?

Florida, Vandy, and UGA do.
TAMU does
I think academics is a big reason why Mizzou got in because it seems not to be as important as to their sports teams.
Research dollars are sports dollars on steroids. I am guessing Vandy wants another private school and UVA is a public that looks and acts like a private.
UVA also has a rowing team and some other sports. I can see a new rival in Bama vs UVA rowing.
