Did the basketball team turn a corner today?

I know it was just Auburn and I know it was at home, but a few things I noticed that I hope carries over.
1. Pressey did what Pressey is supposed to do. He didn't take a shot until 4 minutes into the second half, and it's not because he didn't have the shots available. I saw several shots he would have taken in the past that he passed on. His body language seemed to initially want to shoot but he showed discipline and worked the ball. I also saw him go back to more dribble penetration and kicking it back out that was so successful earlier in the year.
2. Ross played with much more intensity. It might simply be due to the fact we played his former school. Or, could a part of it be due to the message sent in the LSU game.
3. Bell played much more aggressively, as far as attacking the rim. He'd always go to the rim, but he just seemed more assertive. He also appeared to be quite vocal during the game.
4. Frankly, I think Rosberg has figured out and accepted his role better than anyone else. I thought, within that role, it was one of his best games, though I don't think he logged as many minutes in the 2nd half. I don't see much of an offensive game from him, but I see him being a solid role player for Mizzou for 4 years.
5. The intensity levels were better from the opening tip until a few minutes left in the game.
6. Bowers seemed to be knocking some of the rust off. Hopefully he's in full swing by the Ole Miss game.
Somehow we have to figure out how to carry this over onto the road. A&M should be a perfect opportunity. It's a team that on one hand we should have little trouble with but yet it's a road game and they have played many teams tough (including UK twice). It's not a UF caliber team that will blow you out so I think it's a great opportunity to get the ship righted. Maybe we can salvage something this season yet. Thoughts on the game?

No, not at all.
I'm convinced Haith isn't a good coach now. May be a good recruiter not a good coach though. After Miami has become what seems like a top 10 team since he left I have lost faith in him.
That's before we even mention the letdowns we've had this year.

I'm taking a wait and see attitude. I'm encouraged by today, and I even sat after watching the game and tried to figure out what was different, besides Pressey. It did have a different feel to the game.
Could be Auburn, could be at home, could be a lot of things. Let's not kid ourselves and think it was a great game though. There were a lot of miscues, and I'm fairly sure we just chucked the ball out of bounds at least three times during the game. Stuff like that will kill us when we're playing a good team, or even if we're trying to climb back into a game on the road against a bad team.
Time will tell, but I did feel different about this game.

They're now being coached by a guy who took George Mason to the final four

Back off the ledge, I'm worried you're going to slit your wrists.

It's the truth though, remember the excuse everyone was making for Miami before Haith got here?
Well he didn't win at Miami, but that doesn't mean anything, noone can win at Miami.
Haith leaves, Miami becomes a legit legit team.

This is a determination to be negative.
We lost almost everyone from last year and we're still a top 25 team. Chill.

Is it?
We regained our best player Bowers, Pressey is around another year. The majority of kids playing now were all transfer so they've had time to learn the system. Played through Europe before the season.
AO already won a national championship at UCONN. And we may be ranked as a top 25 team, but we are certainly not.

This is the problem with hype. I said it in another thread before this one. Everyone talks like this team is full of 5* players and we should be wiping up the floor with the SEC.
It is what it is. I thought myself the would be around third to fourth best in the SEC. We had a suprise with Ole Miss, but Kentucky still sets at the top being defending national champs. Florida was right there last year with I believe everyone returning. Really the best is a year or two out for this program. Haith is going after some top recruits and we have some exellent players comming in. To keep Pressey one more year would be a blessing. I think Haith is taking these guys for what they are worth and moving on.I don't think Calipari could get these guys to play any better than they want to play. Evidence is yesterday, look at Ross. Bell has been comming for the last three games he's played.
Haith is fine. The alternative is the unknown. I'll take Haith over the unknown any day.

The loss of Dixon, while most would consider justified, did alter the team's potential strength. I still think we are in the race for March 2013.
We just need to get past this road jinx. I do believe we saw a full game effort yesterday. Interestingly, game announcer (and I don't think it was Sunvold) talked about Mizzou actually having the best all around team in SEC. I can only assume they believe output has not equalled potential.

Bowers was never our best player till this year. The team is not executing on the road.
Haith said himself that the team has a listening problem on the road. Get that fixed and we'll be fine.

I disagree with that, last year it was a toss up between Denmon or Bowers. Denmon was very much replacable though with Dixon / Pressey. We didn't and still don't have another Bowers.

Denmon was 2X 1st Team Big 12 and an All-American.
Different player than Dixon/Pressey.

Bowers had to sit out last year after ACL injury in October 2011. We can all speculate how much that cost our talent/ or compared to others on the court, but no data to back it.

Yes, and reedus and I had a conversation about this the other day. Example is the LSU game. It looked to me they took a step forward in that loss. They were down by 15 around half and fought back to within striking distance. Sink a few more free throws and not make a couple mistakes and they win that game. Not to mention LSU was playing thier asses off literaly.

The last couple games have shown me that Haith knows how to coach. He just can't seem to get all these new guys to completely buy in and he has no options to play in front of them. NWC and Jankovic are just not ready.
These transfers are all high profile, but keep in mind they didn't go to Duke, UNC, etc. originally for a reason. They have their flaws. They are all still learning how to play at this level other than AO but he is a head case anyway. That isn't Haith's fault.
Haith draws up good set plays, uses his timeouts well and I think does well with his bench when all his option are available. The biggest problem for this season was losing Dixon. You just can't recover from that until you have had time to recruit his replacement. Had we lost Dixon last year, we would definitely be better this year than we are right now for multiple reasons.
Haith proved last year he is one heck of a coach. When someone like Bobby Knight watches the film and says it unprovoked on national TV, you know there is something to it.
As for Miami and Haith, Haith won 21 regular season games his last year. Larranaga won 19 his first year. Is that considered an improvement. There are too many variables to compare Larranaga's 2nd year to anything Haith did at Miami.

Regarding Miami, we can just use the Arky logic too and claim they're just winning with Haith's guys much like Haith wins with MA's guys. So really Haith should get all the credit for Miami as well as Mizzou.
This next game should be a good indicator of whether or not this team has evolved here in league play. It's a team that on paper we should beat but they're not horrible and it's on the road.
I watched the Auburn game again and I really think Pressey finally got it. I swear there were occasions when you could tell he instinctively wanted to jack it up but he held back and played within himself. He was able to play within himself while still not losing any of his creativity. I still with AO would lose some of the antics. It's hard to tell if it's a hindrance to team chemistry or if it keeps the team loose. I'm kind of feeling like the former.

I don't think Pressey gets "it" yet. I agree he improved this last game but he is the quickest guy on the floor in every game he plays. Until he values defense and keeps his guy out of the lane, he isn't getting "it." Flip's defense continually puts the team in a bad position. Someone has to help and then there is a wide open three, every time. There is no excuse for Flip to get beat on the dribble.

You're right. His defense is horrible. I always knew it wasn't great but starting with the Norfolk State game it has really stood out to me. I'll clarify and say it seemed to me Pressey got "it" leading the team on the offensive end. No crazy shots. Don't recall many ill advised passes. Dribble penetrated and kicked it back out like was successful earlier in the year.
His defense is atrocious. He plays lazy, plain and simple. Tries to play with his hands, picking a guy's pocket instead of with his feet stopping the dribble drive. I do think he plays pretty well off the ball, anticipating and jumping passing lanes. But on the ball he's a matador and like you said, it leads to easy buckets or just as often leads to our bigs getting in foul trouble always having to help out.

as soon as phil gets it on the defensive end, this team will not lose again. I just hope he gets it this year.
