the source in that article is his dad... so I still think its a case of him being embarrassed that he met this girl on the internet, so he tells his parents a back story with some details cause he is embarrassed about it. Problem is his parents blab about it to the media, later to find out he got catfished.

People meet people all the time on the internet. They could have just called it a friend, and made some stupid fluff story about "the two who never met" like some Victorian PenPal shite. There is no reason they should have lied.
Not to mention, if his dad is as much of a control freak as he's been reported to have been, there is absolutely no way he wouldn't have looked into an internet girl his son met. The reporters said on the news that when they googled her, nothing made sense, and the relationship apparently lasted 3 years. He was a top recruit coming out of high school. There is absolutely no way he's that stupid.
