It really doesn't.

But I appreciated the OP because I've got to think that I'm far from the only Catholic who has that little voice inside me that makes me feel guilty for wishing any ill to Notre Dame football.

Even though it really doesn't matter...

I never had that. The vast majority of the Catholics I know from back home cheer for Ohio State and I did, too, in my youth. No Catholic guilt and nobody really cared. The priest even would say "Go Bucks" a few times at the end of Mass before big games and our parish even sometimes had OSU gamewatches, never ND ones.

I think it might be a little different in the south (outside LA) where much less of the population is Catholic and the vast majority is Protestant.

Outside LA indeed.

Plenty of closet ND fans in Louisiana that used to come out of the woodwork when ND was doing well and LSU wasn't. The bandwagon was large.

The Indy Bowl when we played ND was a lot of fun for that reason. Well, that, and our coach at the time played for the '73 Notre Dame team that beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl.

But yeah, if LSU plays Notre Dame again I have no conflict at all about who I'm pulling for. But there's no hate for Notre Dame. It's not like Ole Miss where I want to see them stay in hell for another 40 years.
