There's no reason Ole Miss and Mississippi State shouldn't be having the same success as other schools that are close by (Bama, LSU, etc.).
What are the reasons for the continued mediocrity? I don't get it.

If ole miss and state merged we would be on bama and lsu's level easily.

The state of Mississippi is too poor for organized football.

This, but it'll never happen. Smaller budgets, smaller alumni base, and MS recruits not qualifying are three issues that come to mind for me.

I'm new to the SEC rivalries but in my limited time it seems to me they are content to sit there and hate each other. They don't spend a lot of time worrying about the rest of the world.

If we didn't have all the negative bullshite from the past State would have been kicked out of the SEC by now for being so shitty and us dominating them. We did it to ourselves and now have to share recruits and resources with them, and this state isn't big enough for that.

Second only to Louisiana I believe. We were first not long ago.

Being in the SEC and adding new members will do nothing but help Ole Miss and State's recruiting. Just harder to win the division. We will both have top 20 recruiting classes, most likely. When is the last time that happened?

Mississippi is like the shittiest state in the country. I think the only redeeming factor is the fact that it has casinos.

The creme of the crop usually goes to perimeter states, then the leftovers get split. There is also a historically decent D-I football school in the southern part of the state in USM. Also, as good as the top end talent in the state is year to year, rural MS isn't exactly a beacon of public education.
In addition, Ole Miss and State don't have the alumni-bases and sidewalk fanbases that many other SEC schools have. The state isn't as enthralled with it as Alabama, for whatever reason.
If there was a single "flagship" university in Jackson, as there was a push to do years ago, it would be just as competitive as any other school in the conference. There is much more top end talent in MS than in Arkansas. Jackson would be a central location in the state and is considered the crossroads of the South, plus it would be a bigger city similar to Baton Rouge that would have a bigger draw and appeal. It would have all the potential in the world.
