Gruden's coaching is similar to Charlie Weis. Both are great when they can coach smart veterans but have a lot of trouble teaching and developing young players.
This will be the main factor in Gruden's success. And one of the things I think will take him some time to adjust to. I also think that Gruden will be better than SOME coaches in their ability to not only recruit atheletes, but atheletes who have a higher than average football IQ. If he finds a way to consistently bring in players with higher than average football IQs, they will be able to learn from him much quicker. And really he only needs to do this at a handful of positions for it to be effective.

I don't care who the vols hire they will never scare me.

The thing about Gruden is he wants that control - that's why you would never see him resurface somewhere like the Cowboys or anyone with an owner that thinks too highly of themselves. That's likely a main part of the interest in Gruden taking a college job.
Just because he WANTS the control, it doesn't mean he fully knows what to do with it on day one. That is all I was saying... there will be some factors he has to adjust to and learn. Recruiting, coaching up players from the ground level instead of having savy veterans, etc.

I'd love to have JG in the SEC.....and if it does happen, better to be an East team.
Maybe he can start winning some of the Bama games and make you guys whine about having to play em every year.

bench you are right on once again with the first part of your post.
I think the vols would get a jolt right away from hiring him but he doesn't seem to be a recruiter so eventually it fades away and tenn goes back to being a dead program. Gruden is kinda like a feeding tube for the vegetable that ut has become

I don't think he would, beucsze frankly i don't think eh's that good of a coach and the few skill sets he does have, do not translate whatsoever to the college game.
look at gruden..
started with the raiders. he had an offense that consisted of jerry rice, tim brown and a 99 year old Rich Gannon. i'll give him grannon. he mad gannon look all world. but shite he had been in the nfl for like 20 years. seriuosly.
they made the super bowl. he then gets traded to teh bucks for first round draft pick, inherits one of the top 2-3 defenses of all time that tony dungy himself put togther. the offense, was worse under gruden than it was under dungy, the defense was just that bad arse, they still won the super bowl.
after this, brad johnson eventually leaves. they get worse and worse, he gets fired
this is teh problem i have with gruden.
1. he's not a defensive coach. eveyrone looks at him and says well his team plays great defense. shite hal mummie could have coached the bucs to a top 10 NFL defense. when your defense has john lynch, warren sapp, derrick brooks, ronde barber on it, all you prettymuch have to do is roll out the footballs.
2. he's an offensive coach, and outside of the raiders team with the three wise men on it, the offensives were horrible. not avg. not below par. horrible. he's the houston nutt of the NfL
3. he teaches the west coast offense. this is what he does. you are not going to teach a college quarterback the west coast offense, not at that level as he runs it. he does not like nFL rookies and now he's supposed to teach QB's that are 18 years old how to run the west coast offense when he couldn't freaking teach brad johnson how to run it. okay.
4. he hates recruiting. i do think to some extent he has name power, but the problem i have is , that people who like gruden, this is all they have right here. the name.
honestly if i had to hire one coach from the nfl ranks i'd go with Tony Dungy and and pay a top tier offensive cord.. Tony Dungy is about the only coach in america that can out saban saban. Gruden woudl get ihs clock cleaned in the SEC west with his shitty offenses

This. There's a huge difference in depending on experienced pros vs 18 year olds with limited practice time to carry out your plans.
And it's been over 21 years since Gruden coached in college.

gruden is much better than Weis. I usually agree with a lot of what you say but you're way off here. Weis has shown he can't coach at the college level and I don't think he would be a good head coach in the pros. he's a lifetime OC IMO. Grudens proven he can win big.

They had Rich Gannon, Charlie Garner, Tim Brown, and Jerry Rice among others.
all of those guys aside from Brown were brought in by gruden because they fit what he wanted to do on offense. People laughed when the raiders went out and signed gannon but it turned out to be a great move. I think Gruden would be home run hire for any college school.
