So far, what do you guys think of the SEC format with non-conference mixed in with conference play?

I've decided I'm not a huge fan of it.

Pro:
Break up the grind. (We probably wouldn't have all three ASU, UCF, and 'Cuse if we didn't have to rush the schedule).

Cons:
1.Teams don't get a chance to smooth things out before conference play. (USC-Vandy game was horrible). MU-UGA game was really sloppy too. As much as you practice, I think any team needs at least 2 or 3 games to get things smoothed out.

2. Chances of winning division can be gone too early. We were out of it before October. Being out of the race before you've even hit your full stride is kinda tough to take.

Agree with these, hopefully in the upcoming years we won't be facing 2 top 10 teams in the first 4 weeks. If that continues to be our luck, we're gonna have to turn into a Bama type team to compete for the league

Agree. Kind of saps your hope early. Makes the season long.

Mo, you made some good points really, for either way. I realy can't add anything to other than I don't think it would have helped us under the other format either.

Injuries are injuries. It may have helped in Franklins case, but then again maybe not. It's all speculative.

I like it but we were somewhat set up this year....

You can't have a former Big 12 team come in and do well right away in the SEC! Here's what I mean...

Home SEC Games:
Georgia & Bama - expected to beat us
Vandy and Kentucky...wouldn't you think we would get at least one of these easier opponents on the road and a tougher team at home? Instead we get the following road games...

At SC
At Tenn
At Florida
At A&M....whom we have beaten 3 years in a row and the last two years at A&M

Now I'm not whining but our schedule is one of the toughest in the SEC...next year will be much better!

It sucks that you guys had to play an SEC team so early in the season. We had 3 cupcakes, then Auburn, then another cupcake. We will get into real SEC play starting this week.

I don't know if your schedule was made that way because you guys just joined the conference or what, but hopefully in the future you can have some cupcake games that will give you a chance to work the kinks out before you get deep into your SEC schedule.

Eta: You have a good chance of beating Vandy and Kentucky. I hope you do.

Yeah your schedule is a lot more like how it was for us in the Big12.. I like that better I think. Let the team gel a little before you play the big conference games.

Hopefully you guys can get your schedule worked out so that you can have at least one cupcake game before you start conference play.

Our schedule is very easy this year. Last year our schedule was a beast. We opened with Oregon. I like playing better schools for OOC games, but we needed the easy schedule this year since we have a new QB. Hopefully we play better this weekend at the Swamp than we did last week.

I'll read the op and responses when I'm sober. However, based on the title alone I respond as such:

It sucks. Let's work our dumb shite out against weak noncons first, and then take in the bigs boys.

When we had the Jawja game, I was excited. Shitty ASU,USCe, and UCF make me fear for the future.

The only other positive that I can see to the schedule as is is if you lose to a top 10 Georgia in week 2, you have 10 more weeks to atone for it in the rankings whereas if Georgia was games 10-12, you might not be able to get back up the rankings as easily. Probably would mean more if we were in contention for BCS bowl games.

Would have been nice to give the off line time to workout the kinks before conf play

You laid out the pros and cons very well. One could make an argument for cupcakes in early weeks before conference play, but a breather between bruisers has it's appeal too.

SELA, may be the only cupcake for us this year.

All that early talk about Mizzou lucking out being put in east division vs Tamu to the tougher west, doesn't seem to be panning out.

Nice post man.

I am partial to having a cupcake orgy in the beginning and seeing where the chips fall the rest of the way.

Maybe an FCS team followed by a non BCS team then a soft BCS team to round out the early three. Hoping we get the beaks down the road as our 4th game.
