A University of Alabama fan is awaiting trial on charges of spiking the trees with a powerful herbicide after Auburn beat the Crimson Tide in 2010 on its way to the national championship, and a Lee County judge has barred anyone involved with the trees and the case from public comment.
Updyke, who named a daughter Crimson Tyde and a son named after legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant, has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to charges that include criminal mischief and desecrating a venerable object.

HU is a major DA and should be banned from the state on pain of death, but the tree's have been dying since they were dug up and trucked 100 miles North of their livable environment.
You guys threw crap paper over live power lines for decades before they moved the utilities underground and started using the trees instead. See here is a picture from 1972 toomers corner:

I majored in Forestry in college and my guess is:
Right now the root system is severely stressed and cannot provide enough water or nutrients to the tree's crown.
Without the proper ammount of water reaching the crown the crown will die or become brittle. If the weight of the limbs were to cause any forks to split it would be game over for the tree.
By cutting back the top or crown, it gives the tree more time for its root system to improve and lessens the chance of more damage to the tree from wind or weight.
Any hope for the tree surviving, probably rests on healing the root system and allowing the crown to regrow.
Disclaimer: I do not know what kind of poison was used or how the poison works. Just my guess as to why they would prune the crown back.

Pure legal matter. They don't want a bunch of Tammy Updykes standing around under the tree waiting on limbs to fall on them so they can sue the school.

It seems like I read somewhere they expected to get at least 50 more years out of them before they would have to be replaced which would have given the replacement trees plenty of time to mature.

OMG people, please stop with the limb questions!!!
The tree is dead! They are cutting the limbs off a)for safety (dont want them falling on people and dont want AU kids to climb them) and b)its a normal process of starting to remove a tree that large!
The NEVER EVER was a chance the tree would survive. Some were being politically correct and didn't want to say it, but from the moment the clown dropped the stuff on the ground, it was basically a lock that the tree was gone.....just a matter of time for it to work its way down to the root system.
And he used double the potency needed......
The most amazing thing in the world is that he actually called in to a radio show and told everyone......easily the dumbest person in the state...what was he thinking?

I originally felt bad about the trees. I love trees, am a nature lover in general. Harvey Updyke is a psycho douchebag. But i have long since stopped giving a shite about these particular trees, mostly because of the way Auburn fans have acted since this happened. You steadily squandered every last bit of goodwill in my opinion, constantly referring to bama fans as Updykes (I believe a large contingent of bama fans raised money to try and help save the trees originally) and trotting the trees out whenever you need to deflect attention from something. So now I think you should take this opportunity to stop the most regoddamndiculous, embarrassing, hick tradition in sports and celebrate victories like you are not a bunch of 7th graders.
