Recruiting: An offseason interim coaching hire? WTF?

I can't remember someone hiring an interim coach in the offseason.
WTF is he supposed to do with regards to recruiting? I'd have thought a true interim would have been better in that respect.
Seriously, WTF does he say to 99% of the questions he's asked by recruits and their parents about the future of the program?
Jeeze, Arky fans, I actually am sorry

The players there are very talented and are going to rally around him. I think it will be John Ls best record to date but dam I think this was stupid.

I don't understand it either. IMO, if he is good enough to be given the interim job, he should be good enough to give a multi-year contract to.

He was promoted was he not? I mean to actually go out and hire someone from outside of the program on an interim basis?
At lease McGee or a current assistant could speak with relation to the roster breakdown and direction of the program.

SEC and Big12 leftovers this year, I'm afraid.

How will they ever get thier usual haul of 5.7 3stars?

people need to forget about Mcgee, he has another job, he's not coming back here for a interim job.

Kinda special circumstances. Not a lot of good options when your coach gets caught fricking an employee and paying her on the side...during spring practice.

It would make more sense to me if he hadn't left Arkansas. As it is, I don't understand why you disrupt another program for a one year deal, risk not having a job afterwards, blah blah. It's not like having him would be that different than promoting someone from within. It makes me wonder if they promised him something behind the scenes.

We haven't lost a ton of playmakers like OSU so I'm still optimistic. Prolly not as good as the last couple years but at least our schedule is favorable. I'm not a the-sky-is-falling hog fan like some here.

I'm pretty sure you will find a big chunk of Vol fans that wish Dooley was hired as an interim coach.

Smith, who approached Arkansas, was the special teams coach in Fayetteville the last three years. He brings familiarity to players who did not want an outsider.
He came to Arkansas, not the other way around.

Athletic director Jeff Long believes Smith can provide a guiding hand to coordinators while allowing them to do their jobs.
Smith has demonstrated a colorful, quirky personality in past coaching stops. But he views this as an opportunity to help settle a situation and coach a legitimate title contender.
Smith has been a sounding board and guiding hand for Petrino throughout his career and now will attempt to help his former staff and players through a difficult time.
Basically confirming what I have been saying, he is coming in as a manager for the year.

Their recruiting was already marginal. It's going to take a very good recruiter to bring talent to Fayetteville. In the end, I don't think it screws them that bad, in that regard, considering the difficulty to recruit the school anyways.

At least the fricking Jon Gruden talk can finally be put to rest once and for all.

Part of the issue is that people really thought they were getting Gruden. I had to ask who JLS was when someone told me they had hired him. Those expectations are hard for everyone to manage when they think they are getting Gruden.

I knew who he was because of the fiasco when he left Louisville. Who tells their team they are leaving at halftime of a bowl game?
