Arky is backed by Walton money and under the current circumstances, seeing as how they think they are in an NC run window, I'm quite sure money is not going to be an object for a big name.
The issue isn't how they would get the money. They issue is making a guy who has never been a college HC darn near the highest paid coach in college football.
Gruden hasn't coached in nearly 3 and 1/2 years. He's never been a college head coach and hasn't even been a college coach since 1991. No one knows how great a recruiter he would be. Arky doesn't recruit itself like USC, Bama and Ohio State. So I maintain my point...it would be incredibly stupid to make him nearly the highest paid college coach.
ETA: I do think Gruden is a good (not great) coach...in the NFL. At the college level, he's an unproven commodity. I don't see it as a wise decision to throw Nick Saban money at him.

I don't have a source I know or tust in this matter.
It is being said that a deal has been reached and the details are being worked out. It is also being said that one of the problems may be Paul Petrino. From what I understand Long wants him to stay and Chuckie wants him out. Some are speculating that Gruden will bring in his brother for OC. I have doubts about that since Jay Gruden is the OC for Cincy and they love him up there.
This info comes from someone I trust, but I do not know his source. So take it as a rumor. I am doubful Gruden comes. I'm thinking Long will try to bring John L Smith back.

Why wait? O is loaded and Paul Petrino is a good OC. He just needs to recruit a front 7 that can stop the run and in a couple of years they'll be fine. It's not like the old days of 'come to this university and be on TV 7 times or go to that team and be on TV once." That's over.

All great points.
I still stand by my statement that Gruden will not be our HC.

Hog fan friends that I know have some connections saying Gruden is in.
Yeah, I'm having a difficult time believing the Gruden or the Sean Peyton rumors. I think they are high and Long has a history of playing things close to the vest. Whether it was the past basketball coaching search or when we originally hired petrino, Long hasn't leaked info like the past administration.

Also the number I am hearing is not 5 million a year. It's 4 million a year for 5 years with the standard bonuses.

When was the last time Gruden coached in college? Was he really successful in college before his pro days? I've never understood why everyone is convinced he's such a proven slam dunk in the college game.

I agree, outside of Long I don't think anyone will have a clue until the new coach is announced.
The Gruden rumors are far fetched.

Fair, fair points. We have to remember that htere are not any guarantees with any coach we hire. If we could get Gruden, I'd be fine with making him the highest paid coach, I just don't see him coming here. Not in a million years.

I just find it unlikely. He could have taken the Miami job before news of the scandal broke. There's a good chance he could take either the Notre Dame job or Tennessee job next year, and he has far more of a connection to either school or than he has to Arkansas, and I'm pretty sure he could get an NFL job if he was really interested. Him choosing Arkansas just wouldn't make sense to me.

He was a assistant in the early 90s. I think alot of people think he would be a home run hire for recruiting. Even though he is unproven, just about everyone in America that watches espn knows who he is.
Ofcourse we all know the NFL is stepping stone for the SEC

If a coach is good enough to win a Super Bowl, he's more than good enough to win a national title, as long as he can recruit.

True and true. But I would say that as the NFL is a huge level jump for talent, players and assistants, so it is for HC's.

This is hilarious!
John Gruden is coming to Arkansas. If he ever takes a coaching job in college football it will be next year when Dooley gets fired.
