Really? Have you ever been out of state? In my travels I have seen way more Auburn gear worn than UA. I've also seen many out of state sporting goods stores carry AU gear, but not UA stuff.

The most scientific thing ive ever seen. You mean an auburn fan is most likely to notice auburn gear at a store? Wow.

quote:

It might be hard for you to believe, but in the Midwest, Alabama is probably the most hated team in the US. I'm from out of state and I personally know of at least double the number of AU fans than Bama. No possible way? I think not. You might be correct in the trailer park world, but not the real world.

Mustang, are you serious? I mean, do you formulate a thought, or do the words rush out like snot from a sneeze? you know more fans from the team you pull for? that could not be because you prefer hanging out with people who pull for the same as you? And Alabama makes more money, and attracts more fans because, well, why? auburn fans dont support their team?

No, alabama has more fans because they've been a consistent winner for eighty years. Its not rocket science. Alabama won the states first nbowl games, has won more titles than any other team, has won more SEC titles than any other team, and have won conference titles in every decade since the twenties. That equals more fans. quite simple really.

I don't buy the swing fanbase idea. These are not teams that fans swing back and forth one from the other.

I think there's a small percentage of fans that do it, but I doubt 5-10% of the state swings back-and-forth in their fandom.

And what do you think the ratio is in the state? 70-30 Bama?

Because all the sidewalk fans jump ship to whatever team has the most success. Cause we all know the majority of "Bama" fans that actually went to college went to UAB.

I'm actually surprised Auburn posters here are arguing this point. The Auburn fans in my family and others that I know take great pride in being the smaller fan base and wear it like a badge of honor.

Alabama 70/30 and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's probably only going to get worse, UA is growing i numbers and AU is raising standards. Getting into UA is not the most challenging thing in life, that's for sure.

I keep seeing this, but it's far from the truth.

It was when I was in high school, 4 years ago. I know Auburn's standards have increased, not sure about Bama.

You are correct. You now must like Japanese steak houses and be able to name three menu items as part of the entrance exam.

Its because they have bought into the smaller fanbase = a fambly that has been marketed and sold by AU as another in a series of gimmicks.

I can only speak from the 'Bama side, but a lot has changed in the last four years under Dr. Witt. It's hard to get a feel for where exactly the university is going, but from my interactions with the faculty, it seems that more pressure is being put professors in regards to research, pulling in funding, etc.

There's a lot of change going on at UA now and the results might not be readily evident. I don't know if standards have necessarily increased, but that's definitely on the agenda.

You really wish this were true, don't you? Is it that hard to believe that we just enjoy being a fanbase that is centered around alumni? I take great pride in my school and thoroughly enjoy meeting tons of alumni when I go to games or other university affiliated events. Who cares if it's *usually a smaller fanbase?

Yes, because this is not true. If the most Auburn fans are a part of the alumni myth were true, Auburn football would be as popular as Yale football.

Well, Doc..let me ask you this..isn't it a chicken and egg thing? Non-state named school that didn't enjoy the same success as the state named school caused AU to be more insular? So what came first? Alumni based or claiming alumni centric due to circumstances?

The only reason Bama fans have grew to that ratio is because when Bama fans have kids they beat the Tide Pride into them for 18 years. Eventually the kids give up and pull for Bama so they don't get yelled at all the time. Or they give them names like Crimson Tyde and Bear Bryant and they don't have much choice.
