What do people think about the job he has done? What do you think he can accomplish at Tennessee?

I'll admit I'm not a basketball expert, or even close. My general observations have been that:

a) people who follow basketball closely seem very impressed with him.
b) the more casual fans seem more likely to compare his record so far with Pearl's tenure and assume things aren't going well.

All in all, I've become pretty optimistic. He may not bring in the attention that Pearl brought in, but I think he has a very high ceiling and that he's capable of taking Tennessee to the next level. Thoughts?

He is a keeper.

Pearl left a dumpster fire...Zo is doing a good job of cleaning it up.

Plus, he stresses defense...something Pearl never did.

Zo will be a rock in the SEC like Gene Keady was in the Big 10. If I was a Vol fan, I would take a that in a heartbeat.

I think he has done a pretty good job of not letting the program tank like it could have...the UT athletic dept isn't exactly the apple it was in the nineties...

I like to think he can be more successful. I don't expect him, or anyone, to really keep pace with Calipari at Kentucky. That said, I think he can get Tennessee to the next level if he can recruit.

Our athletic director in the 90's buried the basketball program. That's inexcusable.

Agreed. Pearl coached teams were the biggest pussies playing bball. Martin teams play tough. He's impressed me so far with what he has to work with.

Pearl did a lot for the basketball program. That said, I can't for my life figure out how a coach with that much success:

a) failed to recruit enough good players by his sixth year to keep his awful son on the bench.
b) managed to leave a team with so little talent for the next guy (although to be fair, Harris and Hopson left early).
c) recruited so many busts and players with incredibly weak personalities.

Pearl was an infinitely better coach than Buzz Peterson, but he left a team so much worse than the one Buzz left, and that's not even taking the recruits Pear failed to keep his first year into account. It just doesn't make any sense.

If he can get freaking Swiperboy to show some sort of productivity, imagine what he can do if he can recruit at a high level?

Cuonzo is definitely a keeper. Brings a brand of basketball to Tennessee and SEC that is hard-nosed and fun to watch if he gets players for what he wants to do. In my opinion Alabama Tennessee and Arkansas will have exciting games between them with the new coaches trying to build those programs.

Eta: I've noticed he licks his fingers alot

In 3 years he helped Missouri State University win the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and he won coach of the year. Cuonzo did it with class.

He's 100 percent a keeper.

He was a pretty decent coach at Mo St. Decent recruiter. You better hope he's nothing like John Calipari. Because you'll finally get to the Big Dance and have to vacate every win after he leaves. So Martin is a class guy. Just please don't ask him to be anything like John. Calipari. The only coach in NCAA to vacate 2 Final Four appearances with two different programs

Yah having John Calipari would just be absolutely awful.

I hate number 1 seeds, and future NBA all stars.

If cheaters and liars are ok to you. Then get rid of Martin right now. It's not my opinion on John Calipari. It's facts. I just don't want a good coach in the same sentence as John Calipari. And yes. I'd put Quinn Snyder in the same category as JC. Both destroyed programs with their NCAA violations.

Since most people seem to think he's a keeper, what kind of results do you actually expect from him. Do you guys see him as a coach that will eventually have Tennessee competing for Final Fours?

I was disappointed when I heard Zo took the UT job. Really wanted him in Columbia. He's a winner.

I agree with URHatin. I hated to see him leave Missouri State, but he had an offer he couldn't refuse. He coached with class, he left with class (unlike how Anderson left Mizzou), and he won an MVC Conference Championship.

The guy is a winner. He would've been great at Mizzou. But, I think Mizzou is okay with Haith.

I think Tennessee will become a player in a few years under Cuonzo...

Also, Cuonzo did exactly what he said he was going to do at Missouri State. He said that it would take 3 years to cycle old guys out and teach the new guys the Purdue/Gene Keady style of basketball. In 3 years, Missouri State was conference champion in one of the hardest basketball conferences in the country.

He'll build Tennessee into a threat, no doubt.
