The Number 12 has always been a symbol of Alabama football in my lifetime... We won our first NC of my life when I was 12. It was considered the 12th NC for Alabama. Bear Bryant wore number 12 at Alabama, along with Kenny Stabler, Joe Namath, Brodie Croyle, and Greg McElroy to name a few.

I understand putting 13, and now 14 on the displayed helmets on espn, etc... eventhough they used to use the year.

However, if they are gonna use a number besides the year... I say they stick with 12.

Did they not go with 13 because it's unlucky?

I know. I just don't ever remember seeing 13 on any Bama stuff after they won number 13. when I think of bama football, just the number 12 comes to mind.

13 in regards to what, the QBs or displayed helmets? There are plenty helmets that got displayed that had 13 on them from 2009 up until Jan. 9. As far as the alabama players I think it just developed that for some reason many of the ones wearing 12 ended up being good players.

I hate to say it but the tradition of #55 for USC >>> #12 for Alabama. The players who've worn #55 for USC has been a lot better than players who have worn the #12 for Alabama over the last 25 years.

I'd bet you'd disagree with your statement if McElroy didn't wear 12.

Sorry, wikipedia has some explaining to do.

The number 12 is also prestigious at the University of Alabama. It is usually reserved for top quarterbacks, although it was worn by 1930s lineman Bear Bryant, who became a coaching legend at Alabama.

Bryant wore many different numbers as did his teammates. There were no rules regulating the use of numbers and Alabama, like many other schools during the depression years, gave players different numbered jersey nearly every game. The point? Why to sell programs of course!

The photo I have of his playing days has him wearing 21. In the end the number on the helmet has always corresponded to the number of NCs!
