Arguing that Mathieu isn't a great college football player is just stupid.
However, all the "best defensive player in the country" type hype is almost as absurd.
He makes a lot of game changing plays but it's fairly clear to most fans who pay attention (not to mention the Alabama offensive coordinator) that Claiborne, Reid, Washington, Mingo and the rest of the line are the one's that actually change/dictate a game plan.

Well either you have 5 great defensive players or you're contradicting yourself. Maybe its in the definition. I believe great players play great in big games. TR did in both games. We avoided Claiborne but went after TM7 all night. And took advantage of him ALL NIGHT. He missed tackles and got outplayed several other times. How can you put "great" next to his name?

Yes, we do.

Our defense played great last night, and did more than enough to win.

Our offense just did not help them out. I blame the coaches for the loss. They did not have the offense ready to play.

He's a liability in man coverage. He's an average tackler (face it, if Dre Kirkpatrick had allowed a receiver to drag him to the first down marker the way the Honey Hamster had Hanks abuse him, there'd be 100 gifs of it on the Rant).

He has decent quickness & instincts. He's allowed to freelance because of the talent around him, not because of his own. For him to be invited to NY was a travesty.
