I was defending Mathieu to a friend of mine who kept saying that Mathieu is a lot of hype. I started thinking about what my friend said after the Auburn - LSU game b/c Mathieu's backup, Ron Brooks, had a pass defended and an interception returned for a touchdown...and pretty much did what Mathieu does.
So, after the Alabama game I'm convinced Mathieu is a system player. If Mathieu can't come off the edge, he can't do anything else b/c he sure as hell can't cover.
This won't be well received here. Jus sayin.

Every corner gets beat now and then that's just part of the position. I love how he's set the bar do high that da Rick catches three passes, bama completes a couple here and there (no td passes or even a lot of yards against tm7 in either game) and Mathieu doesn't force a fumble for two whole games and these are considered horrible games

I don't remember Mathieu ever blanketing anybody. Now, Claiborne and Taylor are the real deal.
Slow your roll. Mathieu is only a sophomore. Claiborne and Taylor have been here longer.

This is happening because of all the hype that LSU fans gave TM7 as "better than PP7" all off season long.
Anytime a player like Brad Smelley catches a pass uncontested, I find it hard to think of that defender as exceptional at pass protection.
Just sayin.

We've said he was a better playmaker. Not a better cover corner.
TM7 is a good cover corner. His weakness is his size/strength. The reason those crossing routes are always open is bc the receiver just pushes him away when making their cut. On deep routes he's fine (see UF INT).
Edit: Also, it's become obvious this thread was started as an attempt to flame and troll. Just let it die.

Chavis plays TM7 like a OLB/DB hybrid. He lines him up on the edge for any blitz's much like an OLB. As far as man coverage, of course TM7 is a little undersized and so he'll occasionally get beat on crossing routes and double moves because he's so aggressive to jump on the first move a WR gives him. Zone coverage is what he's great at, covering hooks and flats because he can read the ball and accelerate towards it extremely well.

Yeah, I know. But, I'm calling it as I see it. I was bathing in the Mathieu hype at one time myself but I'm not anymore. On another note, Mathieu is doing too much trash talking, had a questionable/dirty penalty on Kirkpatrick, and was suspended for the synthetic marijuana. Mathieu looks like he might be slipping off the field and it's harming his on the field performance. The coaches need to reel Mathieu in and fast.

This is the only reason for so much criticism. He's a good player with a knack for big players that may have something to do with how much easier it is to take risks when you're playing a secondary stacked with future NFL DBS.
However much better players like Claiborne have probably been scratching their head at his hype.
