after year 3 & 4 and years 7 & 8 of his tenure?

I think those were his down years of his famed up and down cycle at Arkansas. Could be wrong.

If close, what caused him to keep his job? He is probably gone at Ole Miss after this year, but could see if he could somehow beat Georgia and close respectable, keep his job and AD Boone get canned.

Probably same story all over again.

But I think he is done emotionally. I think he lost his dream job (Arkansas), wanted to prove them wrong, 2008 & 2009, but is now spent and doesn't have it in him anymore. Doesn't help Petrino is kicking arse at his former job. Probably shakes Nutt's Confidence a bit.

Broyles (the AD at the time) and Nutt had a love affair with one another. Nutt while many fans wanted him gone wasn't close to leaving.

3&4 not very close. people were riding that high and only a minority were calling for his head

7&8 i'd say a majority of fans wanted him gone. thing is, he wasn't close to being fired because Broyles really liked Nutt and was his protector (and Broyles was a god at Arkansas, so nobody could override his decision). This frustration about nothing being done and no hope for anything happening, of course, is what leads to newspaper ads, people FOI'ing, and banners being flown.

This is happening now at Ole Miss, but not for Nutt, for Boone.

even after leaving arkansas he still thought he was going to be named athletic director. i wanted him gone after 2005. I gave him a pass during the 2004 season which i believe was the year his dad died.

I was done after 2003. How he managed to blow that season, with the amount of talent we had, is a mystery. He went all "ball control" after the Bama game and it cost us the game against Auburn, which led to an 0-for-October. This is after starting the season with wins AT Texas and AT Alabama. Go on to lose to Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, and get pounded by LSU. I was done.

Year three at Arkansas was not good. We went 6-6 and lost bad to UNLV in the Vegas Bowl. Year four started with a 14-13 win over that same UNLV team in which Hooten Dale played four (4) yes that's right, four QBs in the first half against UNLV. And the really bad part about it was that none of them were Matt Jones. We were quickly 1-3 in conference and headed to a terrible year when Nutty finally figured out that Matt Jones could play. The rest was history as the Matt Jones era began and Nutty's job was safe.

In years seven and eight the natives were restless and only the hiring of Malzahn saved his job.

Nutt had two things working for him at Arkansas. First, he had the unqualified support of the administration. Second, the schedule at Arkansas turns at the end of the year and gets much easier. It is front loaded with Bama, and east opponent, and Auburn up front. After that it gets easy until the LSU game. Nutt was always able to turn it around with that easy schedule.

I don't remember his job being in jeopardy after the 2000 season but I started catching on during the Tennessee game that year. We trailed at the end of the first quarter, 35-0. I had never witnessed that kind of thing with a Razorback team...ever. Of course, Tennessee went on to only score 63 points. I had never in my life heard so many excuses relating to how the "ball bounces" in my life.

what caused him to keep his job?

In 2001, by the fifth game against Weber State, Nutt finally discovered that he had "a Matt Jones" on the bench. That alone saved his arse through 2004.

In 2005, he discovered that he had some powerful stuff warming the bench. That stuff being DMAC and Felix. That still didn't prevent his 2nd losing season in a row. He was basically forced to hire an OC (Malzahn) or he would have been canned before the next season.

2006: Nutt figured out a way to circumvent Malzahn's alleged authority, humiliate him, and give him every reason to want to leave. He also pisses off almost the entire fan base by hiring David Lee to help Malzahn with the passing game.

I'm not even going to mention the other crap.

2007: Nutt's pretty much back in the saddle in regards to calling plays and ensures his own demise with his stupid shite.

Matt Jones and Darren McFadden saved Nutt's job during the down years.

I'd argue Nutt would be gone at Ole Miss already if not for Dexter McCluster.

He should've been fired when we lost the Las Vegas Bowl to Las Vegas and not a second later. Set us back 8 more years

Before he was pushed out I would say 99% of the fans wanted him out. He couldn't do a thing wrong in Broyle's eye.

and paying someone to leave is never good.
