Why is LSU ranked so high by the media? I don’t get it

Bama, Georgia, and USCe have 7, 6, and 4 players on coaches 1st team all SEC respectively and LSU has 1. Even Kentucky has 2 players and we are not talking about basketball.
Arkansas, Bama, USCe, and Georgia have 14, 13, 9, and 9 players on the coaches all SEC teams respectively and LSU has only 7.
Then why is LSU so highly thought of in the media and is rank 1-3 in most major polls? The only conclusion that I can come to is that LSU has a damn strong football coach. One who can take less talent and win. The old Bum Philips quote comes to mind: “he can take his and beat yours and then he can take yours and beat his”. So here is a thought-provoking question: if Les had all the talent (3 1st round draft choices) that was on the Bama team last year could he have coached them to a NC. I am beginning to believe he would have.

This will not end well.

LSU has reached the plug-n-play status... they've been good for so long(right at a decade) and always have top 5 to 10 recruiting classes that people just automatically assume they'll be in contention for the SEC and eventually the BCS.
It's similar (although on a smaller scale) to what USC had going on.... granted, they ended up being mostly hype at the end. I'm not saying that's what will happen to LSU, but it's a possibility.

Jefferson's consitency over the years is what has LSU ranked so high at this time of year.

It's because the media knows we'll have quite a bit more players make all-sec by years end, they just don't have the balls to put a few unknowns on the preseason list.

Paraphrasing Coah Saban yesterday. The media is a lot smarter than he is when it comes to this stuff. There are quality teams in the West and who knows who will win it.

Honestly I was wondering the same thing before the preseason all sec came out. I guess they assume they automatically have talent to compete but doesn't make sense to hype them up that much after losing alot of their star players. We will see in sept if LSU is worth the hype because obviously preseason polls mean nothing. Lookat last year with Florida and Texas in top 5. Who finished at the top?

I found this interesting when I read this yesterday

According to @barrettsallee
"Media is 4-for-19 picking the SEC Champion, and 0-for-5 when picking either Auburn or Alabama."

I expect this kind of STUPID shite from fans of other schools, but not from our own fanbase...if you can't contribute something better than this, you should STFU... ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Icongeauxtigers.png)

is LSU ranked higher in the media does it have something to do with the fans? ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Icongeauxtigers.png)

I think they are rightfully ranked highly because of the depth and the lack of a real weak spot. The team doesn't really have any stars, but collectively it is hard to find a place on the team (other than maybe QB) that is not really solid and experienced.

Pre-seasons ranking mean "squat" -- high or low.

I can't speak for LSU or any other team other than UGA but my perspective of Georgia is that we send a lot of players to the NFL who apparently had insufficient supporting cast to form a solid team. Richt has been good at recruiting top skill players but his recruiting in the trenches where it counts has not been good especially on the OL. Meanwhile teams like LSU and Alabama seem to build on a foundation of solid offensive and defensive linemen with superior defense and conservative power offense to control most games. Auburn was a bit of an outlier last season winning mostly with superior offense and a defense that held offenses just enough to allow their offense to outscore opponents.
