Team workouts well underway

****The University of Alabama football program is well into their summer 7on7 workouts, and sources close to the program have filled in BOL of several emerging themes from those early sessions:

- When asked which incoming freshman has stood out during workouts, one source delivered a quick and decisive answer: "Trey DePriest and Dee Hart."

DePriest has drawn rave reviews from Tide upperclassmen for his coverage skills and mastery of the defensive playbook already. Alabama feels very confident that they have two young budding athletic stars at linebacker in DePriest and CJ Mosley. Both have shown to be superior coverage defenders, and according to our source, "if you aren't interested in covering a back or tight end at linebacker for Nick Saban, you aren't going to play."

Hart has also shown a great grasp of the offensive playbook. The former five-star athlete is one of the first on the field and last to leave and has given even some of the Tide defensive regulars fits.

- The same source noted that few other freshmen have stood out in 7on7 work - not because of a lack of talent or work ethic, but because the competition among the regulars is so fierce. "This is about as deep as it has been here since Coach Saban arrived as far as talent," said the source. "Everyone out there is busting their arse trying to win a job. No one wants to sit on the bench, and those kids realize nothing will be handed to them. There are too many talented options if someone doesn't get it done."

- Redshirt freshman Phillip Sims has impressed to the point where it is likely both he and redshirt sophomore AJ McCarron will receive playing time and likely beyond the first few games. One source said that even the upperclassmen who were skeptical that Sims would poise much of a threat to the more experienced McCarron have been converted as believers.

- "Everyone knows the pecking order at running back as far as who will get the start, but that isn't stopping Eddie Lacey from going all out this summer and killing it in the weight room," said one source.

This is the really interesting part of the article:

quote:

Some of the drops and concentration issues at wide receiver from the spring has carried over into summer workouts, which leads to......

- The Tide secondary has been brutal on all-comers this summer. One source told BOL that during one 7on7 session, some of the first team regulars on offense failed to complete a pass against the first team defense for three straight series - mainly due to blanketed receivers. Things even got a little chippy between the squads because the defensive backs failed to get the memo that 7on7 doesn't mean to lay off being physical. The Tide's young and talented corners are giving no quarter to the Tide's receiving corp.

- Although his participation in workouts has been more limited, UA insiders are confident Duron Carter will transition fairly easy into the wide receiver mix. He will immediately be one of the Tide's top two or three strongest players at the position.

Either the secondary is amazing or the receivers suck. I think it is the latter. Someone had better step up. Maze is extremely overrated without Julio to draw coverage away from him. Hanks is reliable but not an SEC caliber starter. We are gonna miss Julio badly......BADLY.

I think it's a little of both. Sure, Bama's WRs aren't great, but that secondary is stacked

I think the secondary will be exceptional, but the receivers will be below average..

Carter is no Julio. Not even that close really. He's a big, solid WR, but not a 1st option

I'm gonna reserve judgement on the WR and 2ndary for the moment. I'm sorta trying to figure out how the QB's are showing impressively if they're not completing any passes.

I think it's a mixture of the two, and I would probably lean heavily to the DB's being outstanding. A healthy Menzie and Barron being able to play deep and not having to help a young secondary is going to make Bama's defense scary good this year, I think.

The weakest link on our coaching staff has been by far in receiver coaching. We have signed numerous elite prospects and not a single one besides Julio (who never actually improved over the course of his 3 years) has amounted to anything. It's one thing to see a few highly touted recruits not pan out, but to see so many end up underachieving at one position while other average recruits are becoming stars at Arkansas makes you question the coaching.

It'll be a much different ballgame once real contact starts. In a 7 on 7 scenario, the D knows it's gonna be a pass. Once real combat starts, and Ds are concentrating on stuffing the Bama ground game the receivers will see more space to work in.
Are our guys the reincarnation of Air Coryell? No, far from it. But in the framework of the Bama style of offense, I think we'll be okay.
