(and yes, I know full well neither the NCAA nor the CWS recognizes or refers to a 'Final Four' in baseball)
'Holy Smokes' is a shoutout to the late and truly great play by play announcer Paul Eells who had that has his trademark expression. Eells started out at Vanderbilt in 1967 before moving to Arkansas in 1978. Ironically, his first game as the Hogs' pbp guy was against...Vanderbilt.
Nonetheless,I'm just blown away about Vandy's baseball program.Sure its no 'surprise' that this year's edition has done so well. But my gracious,if you think Vandy football has struggled, when Corbin took over the baseball program for the 2003 season, Vanderbilt football was ahead of Vandy baseball. That program was THAT bad.
Vanderbilt baseball had had its moments having won the SEC title three times from 1973 to 1980.They were one game away from Omaha in 1973 before losing to Miami. But after winning the SEC in 1980, Vanderbilt did not have a winning record in SEC play again until 2004.
Geaux 'Dores !

I cried when I heard he died. He was such a big part of my childhood. Remember, I'm 116 and there wasn't any internet or ESPN when I was a squirt. My dad and I would sit in the living room listening to WSM 650am out of Nashville listening to Eells' call Vandy hoops (and they had some great teams in the early-mid 70's).

the best part is the Vandy is a real solid team. Tim Corbin has built a great foundation and Vandy will continue to be good. I just hope that the fans/Nashville recognize this and get them better support for facilities, attendance, etc.
I understand that SC's asst. coach Chad Holbrook withdrew his name from the UT job because the Athletic Dept was in flux in he didn't know whether he'd have the full support to rebuild the program and compete w/ Vandy for instate talent. The interim AD that was making the hire is about to retire and he has no way to know what support he'll get from the new AD.

Well, I'm all Vandy so they can win an NC in something other than women's bowling.

Vanderbilt has indeed gotten better facilities. They won't rival historic top 10, state schools but they are good as is attendance. As bad as Roy Mewbourne was in his last ten years in Nashville, he had almost no support from the school and had to almost go door to door to raise some money. Corbin has a pretty good thing going up there.

Support has risen steadily since Corbin took over. The Hawk has been expanded numerous times over the last decade as well. Got a good thing going but I would like to see more support for non marquee matchups

maybe "Holy Smokes" was his Vanderbilt thing.
But, holy smokes, he said that a lot doing VU games.

btw, the very last call on that clip of Paul is at Texas. You can feel his hatred, yet excitement as Arkansas pounded the Horns that day in the first meeting since we left the SWC.

Is this insight into the possibility that really good baseball players are smarter than really good football players, and so easier to recruit and meet admission requirements at Vandy?

If we don't win it, I hope they do.
