Top 5 Most Severe NCAA Football Penalties Handed Out & Ohio State

I'm trying to figure out what Ohio State qualifies for in comparison to other major programs. Right now I think they rank up their with SMU in many ways. So based on history of sanctions/penalties handed out, what do you think Ohio State will get and where will they rank in comparison to other penalized college football programs? Right now I'm thinking #2.
And I don't think any major college football program who pulls in major revenue for TV contracts will ever get the death penalty. It just will not happen.
Here is what this thread seems to be indicating thru 12 posts so far. I wonder where Ohio State will fall on this list?
1) SMU
2) Oklahoma
3) USC
4) Alabama
5) Auburn

ole miss late 80's was slapped with a TV ban but I don't think it would happen in today's environment.

I know it is basketball, but UK got hit with the Death Penalty in the 50's.

Close to AU in the 90's. No bowls, severe sanctions scholarship wise, and sanctions to folow CJT at his next place of employment.
The DP should be used but it wont because of tv contracts.

If not 4th, then definitely top 6 or 7 for SURE. Just cant really think of any other instances that were were worse.

Oklahoma got hit pretty hard in the late 80's and Switzer was fired as a result. It took them over a decade to fully recover.

If the NCAA, which makes stuff up as it goes along, applies the same standards to OSU as it did USC, I could see this being easily second only to SMU as far as penalties go.
USCs probation resulted from the actions of one player and the coaches supposedly didn't even know about it.
At OSU, you may have as many as 50 players, families and friends involved with cars, homes and drugs and a head coach that knew about some of it and didn't disclose any of it.
I would not be surprised to see them lose 40+ schollies over 4 years, with a 4 year bowl ban and maybe even a TV ban (although with network contracts that is unlikely because it punishes an entire conference).
OSU is about to experience a rough next 10-15 years.

it wont be that bad.
SMU took two decades to recover to an average team because of their won sanctions after the DP. They gave themselves a second year off and tehn redid their entire recruiting process to include certain GPA needs.
OSU wont do that.

Certainly valid points, but OSU also plays in a much tougher conference and has much higher standards to meet (See Bama after the Means saga...just going to bowl games will get a coach fired and turn a program into a coaching graveyard quickly).
Auburn recovered relatively quickly with the help of Bowden and Tubbs (and payments to Cam's father).

ESPECIALLY with the oversigning rules the Big 10 has in place. It will take that much longer to get back to a full 85 players on scholarship because of limitations on how many kids they can offer in a given year.
THAT is the hard part about coming back from these situations, the rebuilding time afterwards is the most dificult part.

Just an FYI for myself...do Bama fans blame the entire time you were down on the NCAA sanctions...seems to me some ? coaching hires were made during this time as well.
