Yes...inspired by the Miss. State thread again. Here are all the SEC Final Four teams. Since I am uninformed about pretty much all details aside from LSU or UK...which of these teams came out of obscurity? Which ones were all-time greats? Which have been forgotten? etc.

** - champion
* - runner-up

Arkansas:
1941
1945
1978
1990
1994**
1995*

LSU:
1953
1981
1986
2006

Miss State:
1996

Florida:
1994
2000*
2006**
2007**

Georgia:
1983

Kentucky:
1942
1948**
1949**
1951**
1958**
1966*
1975*
1978**
1984
1993
1996**
1997*
1998**

One I never hear talked about was Hugh Durham's Georgia squad. Was that all on the shoulders of 'Nique?

True. There's only one flagship.

I dont think Nique even played on that team. I believe Vern Fleming was on that team.

Bama should have made it when you guys had Sprewell, Horry, and Hollywood.

The SEC was studly back then.

That was a fun team to watch. I think the game that eliminated Bama was against Loyola Maramount. The game went down to the wire and the score was in the 60's if I remember. Wasn't Kimble shooting free throws left handed in memory of Hank Gather's during that time? I think I recall wondering if would do that near the end of the game when it was really tight.

Dale Brown and LSU so unlucky..NCAA Tourney Committee placed them in same bracket as Dr Dunkenstein Griffith, Magic Johnson, Steve Alford, Cremins Lethal Weapon 3, etc..in years where they were one of the top 4 or 5 teams in the country and/or hot in the dance.

LSU could easily have had another one or two Final Four appearances with any bracketology luck.

He shot his first free throw left-handed in every game of the tournament. All others he shot righty.

Not flaming but if I had had to guess which SEC teams had been to Final 4s before, and how many, I would have thought Tenn. had been to a handful. LSU basketball, historically, stacks up real well ag. the rest of the SEC. No doubt, Ky. historically dominates, which is why it's always been sweet to beat them (not much recently but some epic wins in the late 70s and throughout the 80s.)

Yes, you are right. If I remember correctly, he didn't shoot his first free throw until the last few minutes of that game.

LSU Hoops problems, much like LSU Football's problems, has been the depths to how far the downtrends into the valley have dipped, and their long damaging durations.

On it's high notes, only Ky, Fla, and Ark's winning it all exceed LSU's highs(with it's ancient era NCAA crown when the NIT was premier tourney).

Not to be a dick, but if you ever watched them in the tourney you would have heard a million times that they had never made it past the sweet 16 until a couple of years ago.

BTW I'm pretty sure that our 48 team also won Olympic Gold.

Georgia's was truly remarkable. They entered the SEC Tournament 9-9 in SEC play (really tight year in '83. UK won it at 13-5 and the 8 seed was 8-10).

Georgia got unbelievably hot and just blew out Ole Miss, Tennessee and Alabama (shot over 60% in that game) to win the tourney and automatic bid. They had upset LSU in the semis in '81 and looked to get a bid but lost to Ole Miss in the title game.Georgia was and will probably remain the last team to make it to the Final Four in their first NCAA appearance.

Wilkins had decided to go pro after the '82 season. But Fleming and Gerald Crosby got going and they defeated St John's in the Sweet 16 and Michael Jordan and North Carolina in the Elite 8 (yr after their title). They were kind of the odd man out in that Final Four with NC State,Louisville and Houston.

Their coach at the time, Hugh Durham who came to Georgia in '79, took Jacksonville and Artis Gilmore to the National title game in 1970 and lost to UCLA 80-69 in one of the two years between Alcindor's and Walton's tenure.

I think they would have made a couple if the tournament was at 64 teams throughout Mears' entire career. As it is, Kentucky usually beat them out and only one team got in per conference.
