Why does Dick Vitale have such an agenda against anyone other than Roy Williams, Coach K, or Calipari? This discusses Vitale's verbal vomit that never seems to end about Bruce Pearl

Vitale is a drag on college basketball. It would be WAY more popular without him as its spokesperson.
There are so many other, more reasonable, less stupid CBB commentators out there... I don't understand why they keep trotting out this blowhard. I won't watch a game he's calling, and I haven't for years.

Gary Parrish says it the best.
Vitale genuinely believes, the people who are extremely friendly with him.
It's not that he's giving views to shape the basketball landscape for the benefit of his friends.
He's just a really naive person.

It does get old though. Bilas, Phelps, Vitale...They act like Pearl committed murder.
The two guys who do SEC basketball for the ESPN network, were talking during the Arkansa - UT game, and expressed the opinion that the media frenzy the Pearl situation has created has gotten way out of hand. Unfortunately, those guys don't write colums that are read nation wide every week.

Amen Jed. Kentucky basketball will catch a break sometimes with the talking heads but generally any SEC indiscretion is blown well out of proportion.

Mostly drools over K-rat.
We have a poster on Inside Carolina named Vster who sometimes parody posts Vitale after big games... Calls himself "dookie V". Pretty funny stuff usually... stuff like, "the Devils may have lost by fifteen, but Kyle Singler was more than AWESOME, he was IMMACULATE..."

Pearl is a great coach, but I don't see any legit argument for why he should not have been fired. He outright intentionally lied to the NCAA (a violation that benches an athlete for the rest of the year) and then tried to cover it up by telling parents not to talk to the NCAA about the fact they came to his house. You have to at least expect a little more out of your coach than you do the players.

There have been far worse NCAA infractions that didn't result in firings.
Pearl was docked 1.5 million, can't recruit off campus for a year, and was suspended from 8 SEC games.
The other thing is, in 99% of NCAA cases. None of us even know about the infraction until the LOI. Tennessee was proactive in punishing and releasing the details.
Unprecedented sanctions for this sort of case
I know the NCAA is going to hammer Pearl, I just think the magnitude of the infraction is blown out of proportion.
Especially when lying to the NCAA is such a regular occurance. Let's be honest here. You know it is. It's only that it's difficult to prove.
If Pearl had said, "I don't recall if Craft, McRae, and Selby attended that Party." He's off the hook.
Example - John Calipari told the NCAA. He didn't know Derrick Rose had someone else take his SAT. Even though he met with him a few weeks leading up to the exam, D Rose had already failed to score a qualifying score 3 times, and the SAT was administered in Detroit. WWW's home town.

Because he was hired to be a coach and is performing that duty well. Not sure his contract details being honest to the NCAA.

There are a few reasons. One is if the issue turns out like O'Brien at Ohio State, where the school ended up being sued. I'd assume they would at least want to wait for the soon to come letter from the NCAA. Another possible reason is finding a replacement will be much easier after this season than right before it.
That being said, I think the biggest reason he wasn't immediately fired is because the person who needs to do it knows that firing Pearl means he'll be unemployed soon, too.

The NCAA knew he lied the minute he told the investigators no one came to his house. They already had the photographs. The NCAA knew before UT did any self reporting.

Which is the reason the NCAA has to punish it so strictly when they do catch someone lying. Because the NCAA lacks any real investigative power, it has to rely heavily on the truthfulness of testimony. The only way they can ensure honest answers is by using severe punishment when they can prove falsehood to deter others from risking it.
FWIW I hate Dick Vitale and actually liked Pearl a ton before the NCAA trouble. I wish Bama had hired him the minute he beat the shite out of Gottfried's 2 seed team in the first round of the tournament when he was at UW-Milwaukee.

Can the NCAA require Lie Detector test???? Seems like if every coach and every player had to take a Lie Detector test, you would stop most of the cheating...

no way should you keep a coach that embarassed your school like that. all this shows to anyone with half a brain is that tenn is more interested in winning than than teaching their kids about honesty and integrity. my gosh man!! he is the face of a very large part of your athletic program and you're ok with him doing this? makes you wonder what else is tennessee ok with their coaches doing? c'mon tenn, you should be ashamed
